981st Engineer Construction Batallion was closing down a day's training after constructing a pontoon bridge. A short tour in one of the pontoons ended with it swamping/sinking.
There were many new young recruits who became heroes in my eyes that that day, some died of physical exhaustion while swimming out to rescue others.
Some veteran NCO's behaviors were less than honorable because of their obvious avoiding joining up with mostly trainees working the rescue scene.
