I'm researching my dad's military duty in Korea. Conrad Praski, 179th infantry
division. Dad died in 2000 from lung cancer, so I can't ask him questions.
However, I'm happy to chat with any of his buddies and let them know about his
life after Korea.

Dad didn't talk much about his time in Korea. I know from research that the
179th was an Oklahoman national guard unit. Was it common for drafted men to
end up in a national guard unit?

My father was Richard (Dick)G. Goeckner. He did not talk
about many of his experiences in Korea. I do know that he
was in General Maxwell Taylor's armed guard at the end of
the war and for some time after the war was over. He always
said he was the smallest in his group and he was very thin.
He was a golfer and after he returned to the states pursued
his career as a PGA Golf Professional. He passed in 1981 at
the age of 49 from pancreatic cancer. Wondering if Agent
Orange or the other chemicals contributed to the cancer. If
anyone else was in Taylor's armed guard and possibly
remembers my dad I would love to hear from you and learn
more about what he did. Thank you so much!

Hi,

My father served with the 187th Airborn RCT during the early 50's. His name is Ralph Eugene Bishop. He died in a car accident when I was four (around 1958).

He flew/jumped in one combat mission that I know of. Also, I am wondering if anyone has information concerning exposure to toxic chemicals while in Korea 1952-1954-56. Out of his children born to my mother, there have been forms of birth defects, or cancer showing up in all of us.

Could really use any help. thanks.

DAVID ESTRADA wrote on May 10, 2011

Comments:

My name is Mark Olague and I am writing on behalf of my 85 year old father-in-law David R. Estrada.
He was a PFC in the US Army and served with the 3rd Infantry Division for about 15 months Korea from spring of 1953 and left June or July of 1954. He was/is a folkart painter and tells stories of being allowed to decorate the mess hall with his paintings. One, in particular, is a self-portrait of him playing a guitar in tan fatigues, with the 3rd ID patch visible on his sleeve, and a 4th squad, 2nd platoon sign in front of his tent. This painting and another of his camp during the 'Winter of 1953' has compelled me to ask him of his recollections of his Korean War service.
He tells me his unit was ordered to charge and take a hill held by the enemy after heavy shelling a by US artillery, where they were overrun by the Chinese.
He wants to know if any of his war buddies survive to this day, and expressed interest in reconnecting with them.
I've promised to search the internet for him, and help replace the awards he's lost over the years, so his daughter would have them when he's gone. Any assistance in my quest would be most appreciated!

My father was Sgt Edward W. Burt (38th Infantry Regiment). He was a member of 'Rock of The Marne'... I know that this may be a long shot but if there is anyone who might have known him or knew of him please send me a message. I had the pleasure of being with him for 32 years of my life. Shortly before he past,I asked him about a scar located below his lip. He still did not talk much about it. He only stated that his regiment was ambushed and when he turned around he was stabbed with a dager in the face (threw the jaw that exited out of the lower part of his lip). When I further inquired he said, 'thanked God he was still here and he missed his friends, pray for their families'. Wow, after all that time he still asked me to pray for the families of the friends lost.

Dad also talked about someone named Carpis or Carpes (not sure of the spelling), they were by their trucks talking when a motar hit very close and Carpis was wounded. I have grown up with his stories of his time spent in Korea.

I was in the 8th Field Bn of 105mm Howitzers with the 25th Inf (wolfhounds) looking for similiar guys. We were on line and support at Panmunjum when we were ordered to Kumwha for a big final shootout of the Chinese that came thru the line wiping out much of the Triple Nickel. Many of my basic training buddies were in that outfit and I wanted to be there also. We pulled in the artillery valley and fired from 5'00 pm till 3:30 am.
Then across the road 100 yards to be out of view and fire. As soon as the smoke and dew cleared the next day they started shelling our boxes and ammo dump. We fired just over the hill to our right and down the valley with VT fuses at charge 2. I have located 8 of my combat buddies and a few of the basic training 555 boys.

I would like to communicate with anyone from that time. I was about 2 hours late as I burned out 2 trucks getting there with my 105mm and crew. I wanted to know where I was at times as I was traveling alone at times until we got a phone relay that a Lt and jeep was sent to bring us to the fire site - just in time about 30 minutes before the shelling began. We did get some mortar that night as we pushed 6 rounds at a time.
