Comments:

So here is the rest of the story. It was 6 October 1973. It was evening and we
were all in the Maintenance shed talking about what went on today. We were in
cold state playing war games with the Hawk Simulator the operator could make a
plane shoot a missile by putting one plane over the other and have the bottom
plane go 2500mph making it look like a missile being shot at you. We had it all
hooked up. Had to take all the cables from the raiders and the BCC and plug them
into the simulator. Well, the Duty Officer was our Maintenance Warrant. We were
standing around when or COMO Sergent came running in holding a dispatch he just
got. Are warrant told him to go back and ask for verification. He ran out and we
ask the Warrant Officer what was going on. He said he would wait for the
verification. In about five minutes the COMO Sergent came running back in with
the verification. Read Warrant Officer told us that we are going to war. The
message read to all units assume the next higher state. Which for us in Korea
was state one. Back then Korea was always in state two. So, we told the operator
in the simulator that we had to disconnect him from the radars that we are going
to war. The serins were going off all over the place. The first truck up from
the advent area was all the operators and maintenance. We pulled all the cables
to the radars making sure it was the right one for that radar. We got everything
plugged in and started to get them turned on again. We cheated every time we
could but could not cheat the five minute timer on the high PAR radar. As we got
things back in order the CO showed up and told everyone that he was taking over
as tactical Officer. Well, we waited then BDE called and told us we were firing
battery no one else could come up to firing state. So about six in the morning
the evaluation team came up to check are readiness. The serin went off and we
were at the races. Everything went off like clockwork we passed with flying
colors. Well, we all got set in are routines. Someone in the five-sided wonder
finely figured it out that all of Korea was in state one. So, the came up with a
new state for us. It was halfway between going to war and getting ready to go to
war. Every day we would ask BDE when we were going to assume a lower state. They
told us we were still the only battery that could hold firing state. Well, we
went through all of October and most of November. It was the second week in
November that the evaluation team came to check are readiness to come down from
firing state. Everything was going good till one of the lights on the launcher
would not light. It was the number two launcher in Alpha section third arm. I
said I would go down to check it out. Well, my evaluator said he was going with
me because he heard about my crazy maintenance techniques. Well we got down to
the launcher. I started to talk to it telling it we would get a nice break only
if the light came on. Well we called up to the BBC and had them activate the
launcher. The light blinked and then went out. Then I got made at the launcher
and kicked it in the tire and told it that I have a brand new 15-pound
sledgehammer, and I was going to go get it and tear the launcher apart. I gave
it time to think. We called the BBC and ask them to activate the launcher again.
The light started to blink then it stayed on. The evaluator in the BBC wanted to
talk to my evaluator. He wanted to know if I hot wired it he said no. Them he
told him that was it tell us to pack up that we were going to a cold state. My
evaluator told me I do have some weird ways to fix a problem. Well we were at
SEA range for live fire. We got are list for penalties that would get us
disqualified at the bottom of my list was Special Salopek is NOT ALLOWED TO KICK
THE LAUNCHER. It was listed as an automatic DQ. I met up with him and said
thanks a lot. He told me that it came under misuse of equipment. I laugh and
said OK. We shot superior, superior, we hit both targets head-on. Was not bad
for a bunch of draftees.

commanding officer I served under was Hal Stansbury (great guy!) Assignment
after Kunsan was AFEES in downtown Los Angeles. No housing provided, so I
found a super cheap dive apartment on the sand in Newport Beach. 60 mile one-

I was stationed at C Battery 1st Bn 2nd ADA, Camp Hawkeye
(Home of the Ugly People), way out in Nam Yang, west of
Suwon, well actually our little ville was Sae Moul. Spent
26 months out there October 1977 - December 1979. We had 26
klicks of dirt road before we hit pavement back then. Now
it's all paved. We had a nice setup out there. Army took
care of us. I was also stationed at C Battery 2nd Bn 71st
ADA, Camp Irwin, and helped to turn it over to the Korean
Army in 1981. Made many trips to Shi Hung, Bn Headquarters,
and Pyong Taek, 38th Bde Headquarters. Would be great to
hook up with some of the old Burnouts from C 1/2.

I am trying to reconstruct my time at HHB 1/2 ADA (Shihung)
in 1980. I was a private and later a PFC and later a SP4 by
the end of the tour. I am a probation agent, now. But
weren't there some villages near the Shihung compound? I
also seem to remember some mountains to the east and west
of us. I climbed them. Does anyone remember the Korean
names of local places, near the compound? Of course there
was the ROK compound adjacent to us. Later, I kept a
journal, but not in 1980. There was also a Christian place
in the It Tae Won, also, where Koreans and GIs could meet,
but I don't remember the name. It closed down before I left
the country at the end of the year.
