My Uncle was in the Korean War in 1950 to 1953. I have a photo of him with Ava
Gardner but I can’t find any information on her being there. Does anyone know
when she was there? Thank you, I love this picture of them.

Al Jolson would be the first entertainer to entertain the troops, along with
his pianist Harry Akst, composer of many songs, Dinah, just to name one. The
two left Los Angeles on September 11, 1950, in route to Japan where they did
some shows, than on to Korea. Al Jolson not wanting to wait for the U..S.O.
that would not start up again until October 1950 led the charge for other
entertainers to follow. This would be Al Jolson's last performances, while
waiting to go on the Bing Crosby Show, Al Jolson suffered a heart attack and
died on October 23, 1950.

Jack Benny and Company

(w/ 5th RCT, 24th Div.)

It was around the middle of July, 1951. The peace talks
began earlier and there was peace in the Kumhwa valley.
Instead of combat, everyone was talking about rotating
home.
There was also a rumor about a USO troupe coming to this
forward camp. During combat, we would see entertainers of
two or three hitching rides to the rest areas, rain or
snow, to give their little shows. I gave them a lot of
credit and courage. Bob Hope was also here for the troops
but he was 50 miles behind us somewhere.
On this July day, the entertainers in trucks and jeeps,
came driving into this little clearing. A makeshift stage
was built for the occasion. To our surprise, It was none
other than Jack Benny and with him, in the group was Errol
Flynn and Marjorie Reynolds. This is the first time Ive
ever seen movie stars in the flesh. For this country boy, I
was fascinated and they looked so human and of course, they
were.
On the stage, Jack did his comedy of jokes and Errol and
Marjorie acted their series of mostly funny skits, a lot
of laughs for all of us.
Everyone was standing around intermingling after the show.
I was standing close to Jack. He somehow looked smaller
than in the movies. I slowly sneaked up behind him and sure
enough, I really was taller than he was!
Errol Flynn was walking by and I got this sudden impulse. I
stuck out my hand and Mr. Flynn, can I shake your hand
sir? He stopped, looked at me for a couple of seconds,
smiled and said, My pleasure, lad, my pleasure. I think
when he stopped and saw this oriental face, I can feel his
uncertainty, but I think what won him over was this pure
American slang coming from this face. He must have thought
this guy has got to a real Yankee.

Myself, along with Ross Richie, both with AFKN radio,
recorded an interview with Marylin Monroe when she was in
Korea on tour in 1953 or 1954. Ross Richie was the on-air
talent and I was the recording engineer. The interview
recording was was distributed to AFKN for broadcast, but I
don't remember ever hearing it on air. I do recall that she
was married to Joe Dimaggio at the time. There were just
three people involved in the recording session - Richie,
Monroe and myself all packed in her small dressing room. Of
that I remember having quite a bit of of off-recording chit
chat and also that the room sure smelled good. I never heard
any more about Ross Richie again, but I believe he had been
a broadcast professional before his Army service. I've never
mentioned this story to anyone and just want to leave a
record. 01/18/2018

Hi everybody,
My father Tony went to Korea in 1950 with the Belgian
Battalion as a young sergeant by ship 45 days non stop. He
was there at the battle of the Imjin. He told me that he
saw Marilyn Monroe somewhere in 1951 and that she was
amazing and the most beautiful woman in the world and that
she was wearing a tiger dress. In a intervieuw for my book
KOREA 1950 51 with a corporal that story was confirmed,
the soldier named George lost the photographs he made
because his bag with camera etc... was stolen on the USS
Mac Rae by Greec soldiers on the way back in oktober 1951.
They came back in Flanders Belgium and stayed in the army;
I can t find any pictures of Marilyn MONROE at Korea in
1951 although Burt lAWSON CO 21 st USA said also that he
saw Marilyn MONROE in the summer of 1951 in Korea with Jack
Benny. greetings

1957, Bob Hope group, starring Jayne Mansfield performed
around Korea. At that time Hope alternated between Korea
and Europe every yr. A best Bud was a photographer w the
51st Sig Bn and was designated the official photographer to
accompany Mansfield. He didn't like helicopters but,
that's the way they moved about and I can't remember him
ever complaining. Ab, if you read this, give me a message.

I was with 1st Bn 32nd Inf Regiment (7th Division) and
recalled the day Patricia Neal performed at the Bulldozer
Bowl. She asked if anyone was from Knoxville, Tn (her
hometown) and I raised my hand. She called me up on stage
and sang me a song. I'll never forget it. In fact, I had a
picture taken that day of me and Patricia on stage. I kept
it over the years and when she visited Knoxville in 2003, I
attended and was able to show her the same picture. She
cried and could not believe that I had kept the picture
from 1952.

I was radio section NCOIC 2ND SIGNAL CO. from late '53 to
early '54. During this period we were privileged to furnish
and maintain sound equipment for a number of USO shows in
the IX CORPS area. The most memorable was Marilyn Monroe's
USO Show performance at Bulldozer Bowl. Adult beverages
were made available by the sound crew during intermission
this was one of those occasions!!! Working with the USO
Shows was without a doubt the best times in my career.

troops inside an army tent. At that time he and my mom Pansy Ferguson
