I served in the 176th AFA Battalion on the Western Front in 1950-1951. The unit was a Pennsylvania National Guard outfit, reinforced with a few RAs such as myself. At some point in 1951, several black soldiers joined us. The only one whose name I remember was Billy Gant. We pulled outpost duty together and became pals. He taught me how to play Whist, black style. It was great fun. I have often thought of him and regret that our society was the way it was.
