Hello there,

My dad's name was Gilbert Hoffman and he was a part of the 1685th during World War II. He started in the 94th division but was transferred out before that division went to Europe. He was in Japan before and during the occupation. They were stationed in an optical factory in Okinawa. I have many pictures of him there. I also have pictures in one of the cities after the bombing. He passed away in 1990.

Take care and have a great day!

Ellen

I am also interrested in finding out more information about the 1685th Engineers Combat Battalion. My grandfathers name was Edward Hertzog. I have pictures of when he was at Camp Hale as a part of the 16th Armored Division.. 126th Engineer Battalion and other pictures while in Japan. I'm not sure how and when he became a part of the 1685th but I have pictures that he took during the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. I think the 1685th was one of the first battalions to go into Tokyo after the bomb. I could be wrong but he has pictures of the destruction and the stories that he told my family make me believe that the 1685th was sent to Tokyo shortly after the bomb.

tc,

i unfortunately do not have any information on charles whitaker.

however, my father served in the 1685th combat engineers at the end of ww2 in okinawa. his name was james g. nemeth. my dad died in 2001. i had searched on the internet and could not even find a mention of the 1685th.

if you have any unit information or if there is an association with any surviving members, i'd be grateful for whatever info you can pass on.

many thanks!

tom
