I was the a "Scope Dope" for a few months then an aircraft controller on the
hill "Old Smokey" just 10 or so miles north of Kimpo from Aug.1951 to Aug.
1952. It was one of the times of my life that I am very proud of. We
assisted many aircraft vectoring them in to their assigned targets, including
bringing F86s to intercepts and downing of Chinese MIG 15s. Also guided air
cover and rescue aircraft and choppers to downed pilots. That was rewarding
as all hell. Proud moments as General Mattis used to say, were getting "Shot
at and missed" a number of times.

Was in the 606th from Jan through Dec 1955.

Went in as a boy, came out as a man.

Went home a year later and I thought everything had
changed and it didn't me long to discover that it was me
that had changed.

I stay in Air Force for 22 years and retired in 1976.and
served mostly on SAC bases in the USA, North Africa,
Alaska, Spain and England plus a tour in Vietnam, 1968.

But the tour with the 606th was special. It changed my
life. It was a hell of an adventure. I wouldn't change
a minute of it. At 83 years of age I now tell my great-
grand stories of those times.

I was in the 608th AC&W Sqdn, then 606th from about Mar 54
until Jan 55. I was on the mountain at Topkick Alpha for two
or three months during that time. I was a radio operator.
Whitney Reed was with me on first assignment. Reed was all
armed forces champion in tennis.

Served here from September 1955 through August 1956. Remember our
base being challenged by Kangnung citizens to baseball game in
Kangnung on July 4, 1956. Can!t remember who won the game!

Surely a surprise to learn Winter Olympic, 2018, was located where I
served with USAF 62 year!s ago.

I thought at first that 606th was a typo because I was
stationed on Huang-Byang-San (phonetic, of course) with the
608th AC&W Detachment 4 from October 1953 to October 1954.
Brrrr! Going down to K-18 was a rough ride from our outpost
down the mountain road into Kangnung. I have a bunch of B&W
and Kodak color pictures I took while stationed in that
area. Lots of memories. Some good, some could be better.
But I wouldn't trade that experience for anything.

It was a particularly trying time for our parents, however,
because my older brother Ben was stationed with the USN
down in Pusan, while my younger brother John was stationed
with me in the same 608th detachment. All three of us in
Korea at the same time, since the Sullivan Act didn't apply
to the U.N. Police Action in Korea. Things have obviously
changed.

Was at K-18 March 55 to Mar 56. Was in the Air Police and guarded the
Radar site with the K-9 unit. Very cold winter. Friends included : Don White,
George Pryor, David Adair, Cato Hardy. One good R&R to Tokyo. Went to
AFB in Japan to train with K-9 's. Great experience. Pryor, White and
myself came back to Andrews,AFB where we got Discharged. We are still
friends today and keep in frequent contact.

I was with the 606th AC&W in Korea from Sept 1950 until
June 1951. We were not at any given place for long during
that period. We ranged from Pusan all the way up to Anju
and Sinanju on the west side. We were 65 miles south of the
Chinese border when the Peoples Army entered the war in
November of 1950. Ouch!!!

I was stationed at K-18 Feb55-Mar56 with the 606th All
Confused and Worried SQ. It was one hell of a place for
a 17 year old. I believe the Sq. moved from Kangnung to
Germany a couple years later.
