I was stationed at Osan AB (K55) Apr 56-Apr 57 and did
two 2-month TDYs to Tainan AB, Formosa (Taiwan). The
song which always brings memories of Formosa for me is
Sukiyaki: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-V1EUlzTIw

I have great memories of Tainan and that song. And, in
the mid-1970s there was a club (Orange County,CA) owned
by a Korean lady, Kim. She had a beautiful voice and
sang this song often.

Anyone here from the 311th FBS (or 58th FB Wing) at Osan
who also did TDYs to Tainan. If you have photos I would
love to see them. God bless, Bill Gray

Comments:

My father, Ali Ekrem Erkal, was stationed in Korea with the Turkish forces in
1953. He had a record of this song and used to play it frequently in my
childhood and sing along to it. He passed away in 2010. He had asked to
listed to this song during his last days. I have a music box that he brought
back from Korea that plays this tune. Brings back memories from childhood.

I was a young infantry lt. in Japan on my way to Korea in
April 53. Fell in love with the song with that girl with the
great voice singing it. Sent a record home to the folks but
it arrived in a thousand pieces. September 2016

YAMAGUCHI (THEN FEATURED ON ARMED FORCES RADIO IN "SHINA NO
YORU") DATES AT THE SANNO HOTEL ... U.S. OFFICER'S CLUB IN
TOKYO....
WE HAD DINNER ONLY...... THAT SONG AND THAT WOMAN (LATER
PERFORMED WITH HARRY JAMES BAND)...... GREAT MEMORIES.....
SHE WAS **ALL** CLASS ... AS I REMEMBER HER...... (SHE WAS
ABOUT NINE YEARS OLDER THAN I AM ... BUT THAT DIDN'T SEEM TO
BE EVIDENT THEN......!!! AT THAT TIME, I KNEW NOTHING OF
HER EARLIER HISTORY......!!!!!!!!!!

Seems like every time I think about my tour in Korea with
the 319th FIS at K-13 Suwon, Korea, this tune comes to
mind. I heard it over and over again during the time I was
there. Could even sing it back then in 1953 as a twenty
year old Airman. Now, I'm in my twilight years and it's
just a footnote in my memory of the Fareast.

You must have started your request some time ago, because there are quite a few versions of Shina No Yoru on YouTube now, including my own (at age 83).

I was in the 7th Infantry Division from Sep 1950 to Nov 1951. I, too, was captivated by the song and never forgot it. You ought to catch Shirley Yamaguchi's version in the 1940 movie. She sings it slowly and plaintively, but her recording is
rather rapid.

I also recorded about a week ago Arirang (Ad-De-Dung), the Korean folk song that was almost their national anthem. The picture on my video is of the Korean
show I was invited to participate in. Oh, by the way, there's also a very nice instrumental of Shina No Yoru on
YouTube.)

was assigned 51st ftr intcptr wing, k-13 from aug 1952 to july 1953. brought a record of china nights home with me carefully packed in my awol bag and i think i broke it on the first night home back in oklahoma. i was sick about it. never have been able to replace. you would think there would be a tape with some of those tunes on it. china nights, japanese rhumba, etc. i think it would sell. there are enough of us old goats left to buy a few, plus guys who have served in the far east since. i will wager those songs are still popular with the younger breed of american G.I.

I remember the song very well and ust to be able to sing it in japaneese.
I was with the 374th FMS from 1956 to 1958. That was the
best duty I ever had.
Now it is hard to find out anything about the base or my old sqdn I keep looking but find nothing.
