the orderly room form Spokane Wa or Boise Id. Then maybe
aother man by tha name of McNabb. Coldest winter ever. If

I was assigned to 3rd Bomb Group Hqs, Kunsan, Korea (K-8)
from Aug. 1952 to Aug. 1953. Having learned typing and
business admin in high school and junior college I became
clerk maintaining files, classified files, and typing for
the Group Commander, First Sergeant, etc. Col. Sherman R.
Beaty was CO of the group at first. On a night flight over
North Korea he and his crew were lost. After the Armistice
they were declared dead. Col. Beaty was a fine, good
looking man and always kind to me and others working for
him. He led by example and paid the full price, he and his
crew. I did his typing and kept files, also fresh coffee at
all times. A Korean boy swept and did odd jobs. He was nice
and friendly but suddenly disappeared, some say for
suspicion of being a spy. The three squadrons 8th, 13th and
90th, flew B-26 Night Intruders, both hard nose and soft
(navigator) nose planes. Winters were bitter cold with
blizzards out of Siberia. Our Quonset hut and pot belly
stove, fuel oil equipped, and sleeping bags kept us warm.

P.Y. Do (The Rock) prior to transferring to Kunsan. I
remember the old B-57s well at the base very well.

I was stationed at Johnson AFB Feb 55-June 56 with the
3rd Bomb Sqdn 8th AF. did TDY at K-8 Feb-Mar 55 when
Formosa was hot to cover ChangKichek when the Chinese
Comunists were thretening to bomb him there.
Our B-26s had been in service in the Philipenes since
the latter part of WW2 and had been stationed at K-8
until the Third bomb Grp was transfered to Johnson AFB
Japan. One story told to me was of the squadron's Co
had lost his B-26 in the bay there at K-8 due to engine failure on his approach. The thing I remember most about
S Korea was that it was the coldest place I had ever been stationed in my eight years in the AF. Met a lot of good guys who had served there at K-8 and Johnson AB.
I served as a crewchief on one of those B-26s.

i was in the crypto section of the 3rd comm. sqdn for a year beginning in march of 1952. i'd be interested in other's memories of the bomb dump explosions (reportedly sabotage) and of the typhoon that had everyone in k8 heading for the hills to avoid the
