Researching Harry Joseph Lang born 1931 #13391800 stationed
at a base in Greenland 1951-54. His USAF records are
missing or incorrect. Training probably at Lackland. Only
record says he was part of 23 Strategic Recon Squad-Group
or Wing. No such wing or squad exists. Wondering if
anyone remembers or knows of him.
I have a few pictures that won't paste here but I will send
in email if you have info.

Hello young gentlemen. Have searched for years for a page
like this. Sorry we are getting old now to find old
friends. I was a Danish Navy Seal serving as secretary for
the Danish Air Force Liaison officer at BW-8 Sondrestrom,
from aprox. Oct. 1955 to July 1956. Lived in the newly
built Dorms and enjoyed the fine chow at Mess hall. Worked
at HQ, and one awfully cold duty was every morning 7A to
raise the Danish flag mostly barehanded together with a GI
raising Stars & Stripes, and later to lower both flags
again. Some GI played the trumpet with bare fingers. Poor
man. I am right now on a 1 month visit in Brazil, but back
in Denmark I have many bw photos I could share, and the
name of Base Commander, Chief Judge and others. I took out
a complete Link Trainer course for the Gooney Bird - C-47,
and later flew in Denmark and Brazil for fun. I was in BW-8
in the hectic turbulence when the sovs invaded Hungary. I
am now 82. Wonder whether photos can be uploaded anywhere,
or interchanged ? Thanks.

Hey Guys: I was at Sondrestrom from June '54 to June '55. Worked out of the motor pool driving a water truck. Remember the base gym fire. I got called out that night to feed fire trucks. No amount of water was going to put out that fire; wind was really tough. Remember the inaugural SAS flight? Operations had my water truck and a fire truck standing on flight line in case the SAS pilot screwed up. The mess hall ran out of perishables that winter. Midnight chow became real popular. I recall timing my arrival at the Danish mess hall during noon meal. Great food. I moved into the first new dorm about a month or so before rotating. I've talked to a cpuple of guys that were there in the 70's and they referred to the dorms as those things. They should have experienced the old huts. Especially the latrines when the honey truck driver left the lid off the tank. Love to hear from anyone.

An error in the earlier posting.

The 'new' radio station was built and opened around
April '54 (not '53).

They still didn't have any TV when I left in Dec '54.

Hello,

Just found this site. Thought everyone was long gone
since those days, back then!

I was there from Nov ‘53 to Dec ‘54, running the Radio
Station WXLC. We (2 of us) started in the backroom of
the chapel, until the new station could be built just
below the theatre, around the end of April '53.
(Remember the theatre, with the single 16mm projector
and so damn cold we had sit in our parkas?)

My OIC was Major Earl Steele, one hell of a guy. I think
he also ran motor pool. I gave him a 5 min inspirational
bit in the morning. He was good at it.

We operated the station from 6A to midnight, with lots
of request programs, including country, pop, and jazz.
You might have remembered my voice waking all you guys
up in the morning, and putting you to bed at night.

Without TV, radio was all we had. The requests shows
were loaded with songs by Joni James, Doris Day, Ella
(“Take the ‘A’ Train), and lots of jazz and blues.
This was long before roll ‘n roll, and the Beatles.

I remember the mess hall, and the dinky postoffice.
And, yes, I, too remember the caribou heads on posts
outside the messhall. Once during the winter, some
Eskimo guy brought in a ton of blubber meat from whales
or some such. It was greasy and just awful. I think
the cooks finally dumped most of it.

When I left BW-8, I was stationed in Washington, D.C.,
for the next 6 years, and was the voice on most of the
radio recruiting shows for the Air Force, featuring
the Air Force Band and Orchestra, during the last ‘50’s
and early ‘60’s.

Unfortunately, after I left BW-8, all my pictures and
slides of the base, with all my wonderful friends at
the time, were all lost in travels back to the states.
It was a shame, because after spending a year there,
I had a certain fondness for the place. Someday, I'd
like to return to look around.

If anyone has any pictures to share, especially of Black
Ridge from a distance, and any other of the base, (or radio station), I’d be most grateful. (I have a few from
inside the radio station, that's all.

Thanks,
