We lost i think 3 C-119's in 1955 due to defective prop
regulators. I was crew on #52-5929 when our starboard prop
reversed pitch on take off from Tachikawa AFB, Japan. Our
rapid-acting left seat reversed the port prop which saved us
from dying! My personal hero!! We spent the next 30 days as
transients until we discovered the reason for the failures and
had all FEAF C-119s grounded until regulators were replaced.
The last C-119 to crash had 7 crew of which 5 dropped through
the escape hatch in the cockpit and all 5 made it out
successfully with 4 of 5 survived, proving the value of that
hatch. Two crew never made it out. Plane was from, i believe
the 815th TCS.
