Comments:

I served at K55 from mid January 1953 to about Dec. 1,1953. was with base
support operations in water supply. Operated WWII field water treatment
units at the top of the hill near main gate. Mid year, 2 5,000 steel water
tanks were built to assure plentiful water. I was assigned to the raw water
pumping station at the north east corner of the base by the river.
Demanding job for treatment plant operators since 'raw water" contained rice
paddy runoff with 'night soil' in it! My hours at pumping plant were 1800
to 0600. Usually relieved at 0700 after mess hall was closed but got my
choice of food for breakfast ( think steak and eggs) while regular mess was
just that!

Had local people walk by pump station and got to know quite a bit about them
and Korean customs. Also had for company a 40 mm antiaircraft battery with
6 great Army guys working it.

Greatest memory is when our newest ace got his Mig kill. He flew over the
base at about 500 ft. headed west. Over the runway end he went into
vertical climb and leveled headed east and did a triple victory roll. As he
came about to land, he put out the speed brakes and nearly full flaps and
proceeded to do a "Falling Leaf" landing! This manouver is especially hard
in an F86!
The aces name was Major Hagerstrom. He also flew in WWII.

Following Korea I served at Nellis AFB (15 mos.) an d my last year at Luke
AFB here near Phoenix. I out with A/1c stripes. My AF water and waste
water experience served me well. Did 10 years with Chevron running refinery
equipment. Did 27 1/2 years with a major water company in Oakland, CA.
Have been here in Surprise, AZ for 18 years. Hear the F16s and F34s most
days both leaving and returning. Loud? you bet. It is the Sound of
Freedom!

My dad, Jeffry Dale Shelley, was stationed at Osan AFB in 1968 and 1969. He
worked on the aircraft. He died from Multiple Myeloma in 1999. He was only
53 years old. My mother filed a claim and it was denied. His oncologist
provided a letter stating that his cancer, which is very rare, was consistent
with exposure to the herbicide. I was born with a Chiari malformation that
required surgery. Any information that would prove the presence of AO at
Osan, during that time, would be helpful. Any information would be helpful.
We just want the acknowledgement and to heal. Thank you. Prayers for all of

I was station at the DET 55 at Osan in the MATS unit. We loaded and
unloaded AC that landed. Also we handled Med Avacs and passenger Service on
the Old C 119 and 124. Was not a very busy base. No gun range or gold
courses. Chow was good and the equipment older than I was. We were a
Detachedment out of Japan and self contained with our own comm unit. Served
1847 58, /tgere was about 12 men and three Officers all Lt.s. Back then
the first thing you had to get use to was the smell, the second was the
banging of the base power station. I don't remember many names, but the was
a Kerbo, Mcgee, Andrews, Stubbs (ME) Later we got a Capt T W Davidson, a
retread from the USN WWII Pilot, Cpl Pasha We ended up so over staffed that
I never had to show up for work. Some guys just moved off base. We carried
our passes all the time. While Station thee I play the sax and started a
small band. The Base club sent us to Japan for 5 days and we won 3rd place
in a PACF Battle of the bands. There were some big ones we were just 5 guys
playing Rock and Roll, we all got silver box and a Bronze Money clip. My
mind must be going I don't rember their name either. I have some Pix if I
find them I'll post them.

I am writing on behalf of my late husband James R. Fisher, who was attached
to the 2146 Communications group at Osan AFB from August 1967 to September
26, 1968. I am trying to find anyone who remembers serving with him that
can also confirm his recollection of herbicide spraying that took place
along the base perimeter just after the Pueblo incident took place. He told
me that the base began a process to establish new borders for expansion of
the airfield and vegetation needed to be removed. He claims it was removed
by spraying of herbicides, maybe Agent Orange. After it’s removeal he
worked along with others to set up new fencing along the newly created
border.
He also told me of being assigned to the Stars and Stripes newspapers, to
take pictures and interview troops along the DMZ and various camps there
about their hobbies and crafts during their off duty time.
Does this information sound familiar to anyone? He has battled several
serious and deadly illnesses since his separation; to name a few: ischemic
heart disease, emphysema, serious digestive illness diverticulitis and
finally medullary thyroid cancer that spread to his bones. No one can be
this unlucky without some type of environmental exposure.
Please email me if anyone can remover either Jim or the incidents I
described.
Thanks for your service to everyone,

I Was with the 315th Air Division (Combat Cargo) as a radio operator in 5th
Comm. Sqdn (Command) operating out of a Radio Van on a 6 x 6 truck chassis
that was located near the aircraft searchlight field, and on the road to
the flight line in January of 1953. I was an A/2C that just finished ground
radio school at Keesler with the 3412th Ground Radio Squadron at the time
and my basic training was at Sampson. In July, upon our NCOIC, a S/SGT
rotating out, I was designated the NCOIC and still an A/2C. I remained in
that position until I rotated out in December.
When I arrived at K-55, the place was in a state of transformation. Most of
the troops still lived in tents, the roads were of dirt coated with diesel
oil to keep the dust down and rain from washing it away. The engineers were
building long runways made of poured concrete and erecting metal sided
builldings. The chow was prepared from field stove that were on the ground
and we ate from field mess kits. The base had all branches of U.S. military
on site in various capacities like army anti-aircraft, artillary, amore,
marine, naval and ROK units
When Truce was declared in July, we and no longer carried our carbines when
traveling about the base, and I got DR reports from the AP's about our guys
not being in proper uniform, as we at times wore mixed khaki and fatique
attire for comfort or cleanliness reasons. It was back to being in the Air
Force and we now saluted all the officer ranks. Prior to that we addressed
LT's and Capt's with a verbal good morning or afternoon sir, in recognition
of their rank, and their response was the same. No hand saluting save for
majors and up. The major command unit was the 18th Fighter/Bomber Group
and the base commander was a bird colonel. I don't remember his name which
I should as I had to attend his Commanders Call meetings. There also was a
contingent unit wing of South African aircraft that was also under his
command. My unit, the 315th Air Division (Combat Cargo) flew supplies and
troops in and out of locations in South Korea, Japan and Okinawa, with C-
47s, C-119s and C-124s and transport aircraft of the Royal Hellenic Air
Force of Greece. There were many United Nations military units that were
involved in the Korean Conflict which included ground, naval and air combat
actions. The 5th Comm (Command) units provided the radio communications
between the 315th AD sites and our division headquarters
Today, K-55 is a totally new world.
My salute to all that served in the U.S. military.

Seeing the pictures of Korea and those quansit huts brings back memories
of freezing my ass off at night with my bunk so far away from the stove and
of course walking to the latrine in the winter. I don't think we took too
many
showers. Being on "strip alert" was always tense. The siren scared the shit
out of me. Going out to the village was always an experience. We had a
new flight leader ship in, a Master Sargent that didn't know dick from don
about a Saber Jet. His experience was on P-51s and T-33s, add to that, he
was a real jerk. Our squadron did a 45 day TDY to Chie Formosa. Living in

Landed at K-55 in Feb. of 1954; was assigned to engine shop with the

of each month in the revetments. Was re-assigned to the T-Bird flight line
until the 18th FB Wing pulled out for Okinawa. Was again re-assigned to
a T-Bird squadron on base ( both engine shop & flight line). Rode "back
seat" on T-Bird # 957 during Armed Forces Day over Seoul and Han River
with the South Korean emblem painted on all four birds; Pentagon gave
us one hour after landing to remove the emblems (I still have black & white
pics of the flight). Transferred to Yokota AFB,Japan in Jan. 55 with the
engine
shop ( F-86 Dogs; first '86 with afterburners). They had to put me in my
duffel bag to make me leave Japan as it was a GREAT year. Stayed in USAF
for ten years and got out as it took nine years for me to make T/Sgt and
I saw the handwriting on the wall ( frozen AFSC, they said). Spent five plus
years at Geiger Field in Spokane ( F-102 & F-106s).
