Ahhh, USAFSS at Fuchu AS, 1957-59.
I completed 202 school at March AFB in May 1957 and received
an assignment to the 6921st RSM, Misawa. Upon arrival for
deploymenbt at Parks I was diverted to what became the
6928th Security Sq at Hickham. Was there for about 4 months
for specialized training then sent to Fuchu. When I arrived
it was O/L #1, Det 2, 6920th Security Wing. Later
redesignated Det 4, 6920th SW; then 6988th RSM; then Det 1,
6988th RSM when the 88th was activated at Yakota. Can you
believe... we received an AF Outstanding Unit Award, with V
device, because we were a det of the combat unit at Yakota?
Our mission at Fuchu was unclassified; we were a TRANSEC
unit. We had one officer (Capt. Kevin Mullaney), one MSgt
(Ronsovalt, sp?), 4 202's (SSgt John R. McPhee, a riffed SAC
navigator (a major); Dick Bieber; Carl Manning and me).
(Note: RIF - Reduction in Force) We intercepted USAF CW
radio comms and had parasitic hookups with the 5th AF comm
center's 20 or so unclassified teletype circuits. The 292's
we had assigned as well as the floor supervisors were sent
to us as their clearances were suspended or revoked at other
Far East USAFSS sites. The one room where the 202's worked
was designated a secure area for Secret & below data. We
were 2-stripers locked in our room and our supervisors could
no enter without knocking. That worked extremely well when
I chose to sleep in the office during night shifts and when
under the weather ;-). One of the things we received daily
thru the 5th AF TTY machines was a list of officers to be
RIF'd. It was the drawdown of the Korean War and a lot of
officers were being set back. We put a copy of this daily
report on a worried Capt. Mullaney's desk. Capt. Mullaney
was replaced by a Capt Bouthillier. Fifteen years later, as
FSgt of the 6970th ABGp, Ft. Meade, I welcomed LtCol Kevin
Mullaney and his Hq USAFSS IG team for a no-notice
inspection of our unit. He remembered me and we had a fine
time reminiscing... He beat the RIF. I spent 2+ years at
Fuchu, had such a good time between the front gate and the
Higashi Fuchu train station that I reenlisted and spent 22
years in the AF (15 of my remaining 17 years were spent on
Army posts). Following my tour at Fuchu I was reassigned to
the 6942nd Student Sq, Goodfellow AFB, TX for 201 school.
Spent three 4-year tours at NSA Ft Meade (last 2 years as
FSgt of the GP), a tour with the 6901st Spec Comm Gp,
Zweibrucken, Germany; a year with the 6924th Security Sq,
Danang; and 3 years as FSgt of the 7206th ABGp, Athens,
Greece. My terminal assignment was six-months as a
Recreation Specialist, M.W.R. Division, 4789th ABGp, Hancock
Field, Syracuse, NY. (I had to check around noon to ensure
that the NCOIC of the base gym was present, Tuesday thru
Thursday. Then was free to travel to my future retirement
home in Pennsylvania from Thur PM to Tuesday noon. I did
put together an annual week-long 21st Air Division (ADC)
bowling tournament; Hq 21st ADiv was located at Hancock).
The Division Cmdr asked me to pull my retirement papers, but
I declined. Been sorry ever since!

I am looking for any radio ops/maintenance types who went on TDY to Kunsan Korea on or about Dec 1959 and still have their TDY orders. We flew out of Tachi on C124. I am trying to be approved for that medal Korean Defense Service Medal.
