I was in the Army and stationed on the rock for a few months in early 1970. I
believe I arrived on new Years Eve 1969.
The army left i believe in April '70 and transferred our mission to the ROK
military. I recently read that Father Moffet who ran the Catholic mission has
passed away. I arrived and left on the goony bird C-47 I'm not sure if the AF
personnel drank a initiation drink at the "club"

My Dad spoke of being stationed at PY-DO although I just know it was like mid
50s'ish. His name was George Shaw and he was a Chinese linguist. He spent time
there with a life long friend Wayne Monk Monson.

I was stationed on Pyong Yang Do in 1956 and part of 1957 .I was with the USAF
early warning radar group . I actually enjoyed my stay on this island , but when I
got orders to leave ,there was no way to leave except by hitching a ride on an
army landing ship, so I sailed across the yellow sea back to south Korea .

Served on K53 PY Do in 1957 and 1958 US Air Force. The thing i most
remember are the large number of orphans on the island and how cold it got
in the winter. I was one of several radio operators for March Field that
got to Osan K55 and we were told of this island, so we took the assignment,
What a surprise. when the C 46 could not land and we circled for about a
hour and finally landed. The chow hall burning down, MPC money
exchange, hauling POL from the beach, were some of the things I remember. I
was on the radar hill and had to drive up every day. Rain and snow I had to
chain up all the wheels for safety, some guys preferred to walk. When I
got FIGMO a order came to us that every one was redlined and could not
leave Korea. Never did know why. As Niel Hutsko and myself had our orders
already we got on a small army boat delivering to the island and went to
Inchon, Osan and took our chances getting on a plane at Osan and ended up in
Japan on the way to the states. I think we got lucky. Always remember the
year plus I spent on K53.

I got to Osan in Aug of 69.And in December, they needed
some-
one to volanteer (I know...NEVER volanteer), to go to PYDO
TDY
for 60 days. Until the new NCOIC for the Motor Pool showed
up.
Well,I was FIGMO in Sept of 70. And guess what. I was,the
NCOIC. A Buck sgt. and did OK.
One of the guys commented on this site, mentioned
grading
a road east of the compound. I was involved in some of that.
Until the old D-8 Cat, which still had cable controls for
the
blade (old),the cable clutch pooped out. Slight work stopage
til we could get parts and fix it. We used it to plow ice
off
the wannabe runway on the beach too. So since C46 had to be
able to land...it was a crisis. But we did it. I went to
Osan once. Stuck there for 2wk.FOG! By the time it cleared
the tide was in.Still couldn't make it. Bummer.BROKE!REMOTE
OK. I enjoyed it. Learned a lot of Korean.Had to.6314 trans
squadron, DET5 or 15 dont't recall.

I was stationed at Ashiya AFB.Japan from Jan 1957 till Sept
1958. I was a radio operator on the C-119 flying boxcars and
made several trips to Py Do. The men who were stationed
there were special and had all my respect for serving in
such an isolated location.

I was on P-Y-Do from 2-54 to 2-55 scope dope able crew
(crew chief). What a hell hole! The landing strip was the
highlight of my arrival. Two movies we had were Shane and
High Noon. Lots of Budweiser when the LST came in. One time
we got a shipment of cauliflower (5,000 lb.). I still don't
like cauliflower to this day. Some of the guys I remember
were Malone, Moldere, Bodnevitch, HDK Howell and Hall. Let
me know if you were there.

Was pilot in 6053RFM stationed in Kimpo K-14 in 1956-57. We flew
missions to K-55 PYDo and racetrack patterns to the north over the
Yellow Sea to monitor radio transmissions. Also landed routinely on beach
to supply 55. Thanks to those stationed at the radar unit who guided us
every day. Never lost a plane during my duty. Only incident was C-124
went down in Han River on Takeoff from K-14. Have been back on
business. Truly remarkable recovery. K-14 now domestic airport and
Incheon where MacArthur landed is now international airport.

After two unsucessful attempts to land on the Island beach in
December of 1959 because of very windy condition, I finally
arrived on Christmas Eve 1959. Two Christmas's and two New
Year's later, I departed the Island on January 1, 1961.
I was assigned to the Air Police Unit with T/Sgt Carl
Burkholder as C.O.
My two best friends were Marine M/Sgt Clark and S/sgt Martin
Friend, Advisors for the KMC.
Our Commander was a A.F. Major.
Some of the guys in the unit were, A/2c Walker, A/2c
McMasters,A2 Shumaker, A2c Dietz, A/3c Ochoa, A/3 Eaddy.
A very unique experience to say the least. Very remote.

I was on P-Y-Do from June 1971 to June 1972. I was the
medical corpsman. At that time it was a pretty nice
assignment. Learned fencing, played baseball, got to know
some of the local farmers and others. I thought that the
Korean people that I met were good people. We had a nice
dining hall, gym, and other nice accomodations. We even had
an officers club - which everyone used, officer or not.
Unlike most people, I have good memories of my time over
there. Besides Viet Nam was the other choice at the time, I
guess I have to say that I got very lucky.

I was the 2nd lt payagent to PY Do on January 1, 1959. Landed on the beach in the C-47 with the right wheel in the water. 2nd night there a blizzard hit. everything, i mean everything on the island froze up - all the oil lines to the stove and heaters froze. I was staying at the Lt. Col's quarters and the water lines in his shower stall froze and burst. C-47 couldn't return until the storm abated. Returned to Osan looking for a hot shower only to find everything at Osan was frozen up.
