I transferred to Itami in November 1954 as a young aircraft
electrician assigned to the 67TH Field Maintenance Sq. We
worked mostly on the B-26, as well as anything else that
landed at Itami AB. In December 1955 I was reassigned to the
5th AF Engine Conditioning School on Base. I taught folks how
to tune up the R2800 engine for a year, and rotated in 11/56.
Great assignment, Great boss MSGT Robert Milliron. I have
many memories of the culture both on and off base, The Strip,
of my friends and of the Japanese people. Just a punk kid at
the time; lost in a world of wonder with about 125 bucks a
month to spend.

I was a P-51 pilot in the 342nd Ftr. Sq., 348th Ftr. Gr. and
was stationed at Itami from October 1945 until May 1946. We
WERE flying combat mission out of IE SHIMA against Japanese
targets on Kyushu when the war ended. I leading eight
Mustangs on a Cat Cover mission just off the SE coast of
Kyushu on 9 August 1945 and watched as the A Bomb exploded
over Nagasaki. We were circling there providing top cover
for the Catalina that was also circling there below us in
case the B-29 carrying the A Bomb had some emergency. When
the war ended we were stationed at Itami Air Base and flying
surveillance missions over Southern Honshu. But, we soon
lost our P-51s for lack of maintenance. All of our crew
chiefs had enough points to go home, and we began having to
get our flying time in L-5s. I spotted the Takarazuka nine
hole golf course from the air one day--and my friends and I
spent the warm spring days playing golf there. My friends,
Bat Masterson and Snake Stapleton and I left Itami in May of
1946, returned to the States and were discharged from the
Air Corp..

equipment until site deactivation, as I recall. There were about 8-10 of
us, plus a Lt OIC, living in a Japanese compound somewhere in the
area. One name I remember was SSgt Casnelli.

I was at Itami AB from April 1956 thru the summer of 1957, when we all moved to Yokota AB. I was a PI along with 7 or 8 others who completed PI school at Sheppard in Mar or Apr 1956 and we all were assinged to the 67 Recce Tech Sq at Itami. Flew to Japan in a C-97 with the seat facing to the rear and returned the same way in 1958. We all used to run the trip outside the main gate and or ride the train to Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto among other places. Have been in contact with one other PI (Manning)who was there at the same time, but no others.
Remember we all had to pull guard duty about monthly and then has CQ runner that nite. The photo lab was in a sperate building from the PI section, that was in an old "H" shape building. I remember Brando and Buttons when the movie made at Itami. Thank for reading this, lets hear from you'll. Art Zambile/CMSgt/Retired

I've found a few of the old guys that were stationed at Itami with the 67th Tactical Recon Wing. I was stationed at the Base Photo Lab (BPL) Some of the men were: Jim Dallas, Base BPL, Marv. Gardner BPL, Richard Tsuda, not sure of his unit, possibly the 11th or 12th Recon Squadron. I had some good assignments while there. The 67th sent to cover the filming of the movie Sayonara, in Kyoto and at Itami Air Base. I got some great photos on the actors, I also think Red Buttons a very nice person. When ever he saw me, he would come up to me and talk for awhile. Brando was a jerk in my mind. One time in Kyoto, he was eating an apple. When he finished eating,, he threw the apple core to some, who were watching the filming. There were some good times at the base. I'm Still kicking, (80 Years old) and not planning to go to the "Big Photo Lab in the Sky" for a long time.

I have been looking fo Itami vets online for over 10 years.
I found a few. The rest are dead or too old to give a damn.
From what I found out about Itami Air Force base from 1953 until 1957 online, the world would just rather not be bothered.
I was in Flt Line Maint and 11 and 12 TAC. 1955/1957.
I partied at Hamadera Koen with the NCO'S and rode the NCO bus back to work in the morning..Ok so I missed roll call. I was having a good time.
I rode with the "Itami Angels" Yes, I froze my ass with the rest of you that made the ride to see Marlon Brando and got the shuffle.
Thanks for Red Buttons at least he wasn't an ass.
So if you are breathing and can still reach the keyboard give this ole dude a shout.
