I arrived at Lackland January 3, 1951. I was coming from Oregon and had only the
clothes on my back and a change of underwear. I was thrust into the middle of
"Tent City". Slept on cot springs, no mattress, no clothing issue, no heat
source in the tents. Thankfully, I was only there 9 days. I shipped out suddenly
...and it was cold. If I remember correctly, I was issued one set of clothing
just a few hours before 10 of us boarded a train bound for Florida.
After that I would say that I was very lucky. However, I was never given the
opportunity to attend tech school. I was not given an AFSC number until the
small base I was on closed after the war. I did make S/Sgt after three years and
spent the last 12 months in France, Germany, French Moracco (Algeria), and
Madrid, Spain. In Madrid I was in a JUSMAG unit attached to the American
Embassy. Three months wearing civilian clothing and receiving a nice clothing
allowance. After Lackland I have very fond memories of the Air Force and
recognize the value of what it did for me.

I was stationed in Lackland in the early 50s. I am looking for anyone who
trained there during that time. I have no material from the base. According to
the VA all of my service records were burned in a fire in 1973. I remember the
sand storms, go to bed and wake in the morning with an outline where I was
laying and the sand forming an outline. I was transferred to Arlington,
Washington to the McChord air field. I served in the Army and Air Force. I was
also in Fort Jackson, SC and Fort Bragg, NC. I would like to hear from anyone
serving either location during these years.

Got there in early June, 1954. Having been born, bred and raised in a
cattle ranch, basic was easy. Being drafted, I joined the AF instead.
Sent to Wyoming after basic to tech training, and ended up on a ship, the
USS Buckner, landed in Yokohama late winter, put on an C-124 and ended in
Hell in wee hours of the morning in Seoul, Korea. Put us on a 6x truck and
ended near the 38th parallel north inside a make shift steel quonset hut.
The coal-oil pot belly stove on, I ask the guy what he was doing and he told
us he was popping body lice in on the stove. I felt like sleeping out that
night, but was too damn cold, even with goose-feather filled sleeping bags!
Return back one year later the same way I came.
It was a great experience and wouldn't change it for anything. The ranch
was never the same again, and stayed on for 22 years! retired in '76.

Enlisted July 13, 1951. Train ride from Columbus, Ga to Lackland. Put in
tent city for about a week or ten days. Late July and it was hot. Tent did
have wooden floor and canvas siding was up 24 hrs a day. Dusty as hell and no
rain . No electricity in tent. I was lucky and did get black brogans, most
got the brown rough leather. We were issued kaki's for summer and wool blue
Ike jacket and blouse for winter. Got haircuts and inoculations (shots) and
off to Sheppard. Decided I did not have the emotional stability to endure
multiple remote/north pole/DEW line assignments. Got out after eight years.

Does anyone remember Airman First Class Harry Joseph Lang
enlisted 1951 Lackland AFB and later reassigned possibly to
23rd Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron-Group-Wing in
Greenland probably at Thule AFB?
His USAF military record was destroyed in fire 1973 St.
Louis Archive Record facility.
I am his niece and we are trying to salvage his history.

I was sworn in on July 13, 1951 in Milwaukee, WI. We were
transported by train to Lackland AFB. We arrived on base
about 3:00 am. We were taken to a mess hall for our first
AF meal. Hot dogs and Beans. I was assigned to Flight
1844 and was housed in Tent City as were the majority of
men there at the time. We were issued a Pith Helmet,
underwear, and a canteen, no uniforms. My first two weeks
I wore my civi's. Blue flannel slacks, blue suede shoes,
and T shirts I had brought with me.
It was Hot! and in the middle of a drought. We had dust
storms and were visited at night by Blister Bugs.Tent
visitors were rattle snakes and some scorpions.
My first military issue shoes were leather brogans. Leather
color, not black. The outside of the brogans had tiny
strands of leather. We put lighter fluid on the strands
and burned them off quickly. We used stones to smooth the
leather, then dyed them black. Best Brogans I had in the
Air Force. KIWI gave each man a shoe brush and black
polish free. Still use the Brush.
I graduated Sept 14, 1951 from Basic Training. I was flown
to Keesler AFB and over the years graduated from
Electronics, Control Tower Operator, Ground Control
Approach, and "7" level triple threat school. I served my
tour in Air Traffic Control and was discharged July 13,
1955 at Presque Isle AFB ME. as Staff Sgt.
I was fortunate to have served with such great men, and the
USAF. God Bless America!

I am Chief MSgt,Ret. After 2 years at Chowan College in NC. The draft board
said you enlist or be drafted. I. don't know how much I learned in college but
I was smart enough to know that draft meant Korea combat boots and a M-
1 rifle. Along with 5 other guys I enlisted in AF arriving at Lackland 13 July
1951.Flight 1537,living in tar paper barracks. I heard later that a
congressional investgation put a halt to the tent city living conditions you
have read about at boot camp. Also no one has mention about Chow
Runners as many have complained about waiting in chow lines. Our TI
selected some GIs for this job. I was one of them. I don't know why. When
the loud morning music started the chow runner hi-tailed it to chow hall and
entered our Flt No on the wait list. When the fat mess cook yelled for my
flight, I high-tailed it o get my TI and then on to barracks rushing to get my
area in order. This method got us in for the SOS and coffee pronto. Went on
to tech school at Univ of Okla ,then to Camp Stoneman,CA. Did get to Korea
but not til 1959. By then Korea was a great tour Retired with 26 years.
Would have posted this info years ago but never looked it up. Busy with big
social life here in Las Vegas until now just ole soldier on google waiting for
fade away day. Anybody out there with Chow Runner experience? Nothing

I arrived the last of March l951 and was assigned to flight
1118... I was from Memphis Tn and had 3 years of ROTC IN my
high school that I had just completed...I think this helped
a lot adjusting to the Air Force...I remember many of the
guys especially the ones from the north could not get used
to calling their instructors ""SIR'' when adressing
them..We lived in tent city and I remember the tent leaking
and our bunks would sink in the mud overnight..It was great
fun going to San Antoni in our mid break for the day...I
retired from Grissom AB Ind. in 1971 and went to work for
BASF Wyondatt until I retired and have been living on the
beach since them...Many Happy Memories......

I was at Lackland from Jan. 51 to Mar. 51 and lived in tent
city Despite the tents met great guys. Greatest memory was
the few days San Antonio had ice storm and some brilliant
Officer decided we would be better off sleeping on the floor
of Barracks. Needless to say we were all healthy prior to
that but right after almost all came down with terrible colds,
etc.

I was at Lackland Nov 1951. My best memories there was of
the training .I was in 3712.Squadron, Flt 2525. After
basic I went to Ellington AFB, Texas for training. Was
shipped to Chaumont, France.for 3 years . Retired in 1972
from Air Force at Minot AFB, North Dakota. My total career
was spent in Civil Engineers. After that I taught school
for 15 years. The Air Force saved me from a life better
than what i would have had.I'll never forget friends , some
I still keep in touch with. Good Luck to all.

arrived lackland march 28 1951. spent 10 days in tents (no electric, no floor, no heat, army cots with 4 blankets. did some processing during this time. used latrine in barracks across the street. the guys living in the barracks hated us for messing up their facility. my cousin who was a 2nd lieutenant came out to visit me for a few minutes. i was so brain washed i actually saluted him. he looked 10 feet tall and like a 4 star general. after 10 days my group, due to the overcrowding, was sent up to wichita falls for 8 more weeks of basic. after that it was off to louisiana, montana, japan-korea, and back to texas where it all began. discharged as a staff sergeant in jan 1955. sometimes i actually wish i had made a career of it. most interesting time of my life.

I was at Lackland, at first in the tent area, from Jan. 12 to March, 1951. I was in Flight 206. I've forgotten the Training Squadron. My Sq. Commander was Capt. Milton Glover, a former college classmate.
