Comments: Staff Sergeant Richard J. Patterson was a firefighter with the 6332nd Air Installation Squadron, 6332nd Air Base Group at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa. On September 15, 1950, he was killed when a B-29A Superfortress Bomber with the 28th Bomber Squadron, 19th Bomber Group, crashed on takeoff. During this crash, the explosion destroyed the fire station, demolished the firefighters equipment, and destroyed the control tower. Two firefighters lost their lives, Corporal Jack Morris and Staff Sergeant Richard D. Patterson of Ohio, who do not appear on official casualty lists.
