Comments: Major Hayes was a passenger on a PBM-5S Mariner patrol bomber from Patrol Squadron 46 U.S. Navy. On January 11, 1951, his aircraft crashed at sea near Amami Oshima, Japan and he drowned. His remains were not recovered. Water looped at landing. BUNO 84662.

DPAA: On January 11, 1951, a PBM Mariner (bureau number 84662) carrying fourteen crew members was returning from a combat mission and attempting to land at Amami Oshima in the Ryukyu Islands when it crashed in the East China Sea. The Mariner hit a five-foot swell, bounced, cartwheeled, and exploded before sinking. Five of the crew members became trapped in the aircraft and were unable to get out before it sank. Salvage operations later recovered the bodies of two of these men.
