Joined USMC 1945-1949. Bootcamp Plt 652 at PI. Went to Peping China till
47, then Guam, and back to El Toro. Seper-ated in 49.

Joined active reserve in St.Louis Mo. When Korean war started was
activated. Went to Itami Japan and joined uo with VMF 311 (ordnance).

Went to Hungnam Korea for short sting and had to scoot out real quick,
back to Japan, and returned to Korea later.

Was only in Korea for one year, and rotated back to states for
seperation, because of reserve status.

Anyone who wants information on the "VMF 311 Association", drop me a
note, Email, letter, or phone call, and I'll put you in touch with the
311 contact person.

The association is very active, and has annual reunions, in various
locations in the US. Never been to one myself, but sort of would like to
go.

I have a large picture of all of the ordnance crew (if I can find it),
and if I do, will gladly send a copy to anyone wanting a copy...(have to
find it first).

We were land based, had F4U panther F9F panther jets. First landed in
Hungnam ( on spelling), then during the retreat, had to go back to
Japan, reorganize, then back to S Korea. I was there for 1 year as a
reserve, then got seperated. Was in earlier 45-49, and spent two years
in China (great duty).

Thanks,
Al Baird

My father was a highly decorated pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps
Reserves.

His squadron, VMF-311, conducted among other things, attacks on the
bridges over the Yalu River.

He won the Air Medal twice and the Distinguished Flying cross twice.

Do you have any information on VMF-311?

I found the site to be very interesting. I would like to be able
to contact friends who were in VMF 311 at the time I was March
1952 thru August of 52. I left there very suddenly due to WIA.

Casualty Missions - Hungnam

I was particularly glad to discover this site and its links. I flew
in VMF-311. Flew in the first CAS mission out of Hungnam. We were
evacuated almost immediately. Flew missions from Pusan (K-2?) in
January, and then out of K-9 starting in February, 1950.

Was transferred to the Division as an FAC, and worked with the 1st Bat,
1st KMC's, on the south rim of the Punch Bowl. Then joined the 5th
Marines as Regimental Air Officer. Returned to the States at the end of
September.

In the latter half of 1954 I returned to Korea and served as Operations
Officer, Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of MACS-3. We were
stationed about 20 miles east of K-9 on the tip of the peninsula.

VMF-143 Crews attached

Dear Sirs,

I wrote you a couple days ago re: VMF-143, the "Ragin' Cajun" squadron
from south Louisiana; I have since learned from one of the pilots in the
squadron that when half its pilots and ground crew were sent to fight in
Korea, they did so not as VMF-143, but rather joined VMF-115 and 311.

(I am a history student at Texas A&M and I am looking for historical
information on VMF-143, the "Ragin' Cajun" squadron out of the US Naval
Air Station at New Orleans; half of this squadron was activated on
March 1, 1951, and sent to Korea for combat missions . . . but did so
perhaps not as VMF-143, but another designation. Do you know how I
might find more information on this squadron? (I have spoken with a
couple of veterans from the squadron, but none have a written history or
historical documents re: the squadron, which is what I am now really
looking for.))

Sincerely,

S. Bernard
