My wife's father is a marine corps pilot MIA. After years of trying,
we finally got his files, which were classified for a long time.

They contain a map reference to where his plane went down, XE 1002.
We do not yet uderstand how military map references work, and any
help or guidance you could give us would be very much
appreciated.

Thank you for the answer. My wife's father was Thomas M. Sellers, U.S.
Marine Corps Major, Serial Number 029118. he originally served with the
Marine Fighter Squadron 115, Marine Air Group 33, but when he went MIA on
20 July 1953 while serving with the 336th Fighter Interceptor Squadron,
4th Fighter Interceptor Wing, USAF.

In that action where he shot down his second and third MiG-15. Major
Sellers held two Silver Stars (not one as in some references), Air Medal
with Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with Gold Star, Air
Medal with Five Gold Stars.

We have gotten a contemporary map which shows us that XE was in north
western Korea and the adjacent area of China, but do not yet have a
1:100,000 map.

Again, my thanks.
