Greetings Edward, Found your msg August 1998

I am a French Veteran (Navy) of the Korean War. I served aboard
the FMS "La Grandière", a frigate in 1950. On 8 September 1950 LA
GRANDIERE joined Attack Force 90.42 with three minesweepers: USS
PARTRIDGE (AMS 31), USS OSPREY (AMS28) and USS MOCKING BIRD.
Also, under our protection (AA and AS), in our convoy were other
ships (ocean tugs with their floating stage elements etc..) Our
group was the first to to depart Sasebo Japan. We arrived off
Inchon the night of 14 September to participate Inchon landings
...
With HMS MOUNTS BAY, we opened fire with 40mm anti aircraft guns
destroying quite a few russian made floating mines. So far a
total of 54 mines had been sighted our group ...
Later we were off Wonsan, in escort of troopships with a brigade
of Marines aboard.

The channel was heavely mined and we have had a hair raising
navigation in this channel to protect the troopships.

I remember that, at Wonsan, two US minesweepers USS PIRATE (AM
275) and USS PLEDGE (AM277) had been sunk on the 12th of October.
We were off Wonsan on the 21st.

I dont know where was the USS PARTRIDGE in this time . Hoping that these
poor informations may help you.

Perhaps can you hear other veterans US or Allied Nations (British
and Commonwealth) who was with us for Inchon and Wonsan invasions
September, October 1950.

Till, perhaps, we correspond again. This story is on the french site

Friendly yours.

Also can provide some details on MINRON 3 operations in Japanese and
Korean waters during 1950 and 1951.

The World Book Encyclopedia Vol. 11, J-K, c1978, page 303 states,
" Five Navy ships were sunk and 82 were hit during the war.

The vessels sunk were the minesweepers Pledge, Partridge, Pirate, and
Magpie, and the tug Sarsi."

Your list of ships mentions Pledge and Sarsi, but not he others.

I hope this is of some help.

Thank you for your project.
