From: Russell D. Stephens Email address Part of August, September, and first 10 days of October, 1950, USS Endicott DMS35 was swinging from anchor in Msan, Chinhae Man area as "direct gunfire support" for the Army 24th Division Field Artillery. Shooting interdiction and harrassment fire on select targets. We blew a gun implacement off the top of a mountain on the south end of the bay we were anchored in, not once but twice in about 5 or 6 days. The Exec would watch them carry it up to the mountain top, and wait until they were just about ready to start firing, then he would change the ready mount and blow them away. We were very light gunfire support, as we only had 3 single 5 inch 38 mounts, and two quad 40 mm tubs. Just wanted to get this into the recordl. Russ Stephens RM3 In Korea from July 1950 to March 1951, and from October 1951 to may 1952. The Endicott won 8 Battle stars, and the South Korean Presidential Unit Citation during 3 tours of duty with the first two tours conducted on the east coast. She also picked up survivors from the USS Pirate and USS Pledge, two 180 foot metal mine sweepers that were sunk on 12 October 1950 as they were going into the outer harbor at Wonsan. Can maybe scrape up some more info if you would like to have it. Russ Stephens 2310CDT 041701 e-mail RDSADA1@WORLDNET.ATT.NET
