On Fri, 05 Jun 1998 Mike Casey Email address wrote: Camp Pelham I just found this site and it brought back many memories of my year on the dmz, 74-75. I was a signal officer (1LT, then CPT) with the 2/17th field artillery at Camp Pelham, just south of the Imjin and the Z. I'll never forget my in-briefing from the Bn Cdr, LTC Leroy Bell. He said: "When the balloon goes up, Our mission is to race across the river with our towed 105's, fire the basic load of ammo ASAP, spike the guns, blow up the trucks , assume the role of infantry, and try to get back across the river; the engineer platoon with outboard motor rubber rafts that's here at camp is supposed to help us back across". I said: "Sir, that's a suicide mission". He said: "LT, you have a fine grasp of the obvious, move out". During the next year I gained a huge respect for the GI's who pounded that ground in combat, what heroes. My name is Mike Casey, I'm a lawyer in Spokane, Washington. I'd like to hear from anyone from that era.

Camp Greaves 1975-76 The site is truly amazing and brought many memories of my year in the ROK. It was a great first assignment for a new infantryman and there were great people there. In fact I am still in touch with a few of my buddies from Cp. Greaves. I have a bunch of photos from my tour that I would be willing to donate to the site if you or your brother would like. Just let me know & I'll be glad to help anyway I can. You can see a picture of me and a friend at my web site: http://www.iconn.net/dgrundel/acs.html Thanks for the web site, it's great. I recall during my first tour with the 38th INF there were many Korean War veterans filling its ranks as Platoon Sergeants in the rifle platoons. Many of them had earned the CIB, third award. On my later assignment with the 17th INF, my Platoon Sergeant, SFC Robert Edwards (Korean, Veteran 38th INF), would recount many of his Korean War experiences.

Date: Thu, 22 Aug 1996 From: jammer@oz.net (Jammer) Liberty Bell The unit was later redesignated the 1/506th Infantry Battalion in the late 80s. The unit based at Camp Greaves, Korea, north of the Imjin River. Dave Gruendel HHC, 1/506th Inf (89-90) I understand from one of my employees that the Panmunjom compound is now refered to as the JSA compound, and that Camp Liberty Bell is now called "Warrior Base", or just doesn't exist anymore. I recognize the name Greaves, but not the other names I've heard at work. I thought the 506th was an Airborne unit. My experience with Liberty Bell was in the 2nd Bn, 9th Infantry, in 1975-76. Does anyone have current information? End Section: Go to Top

I also wonder what became of that bunker system, whether it is still used or was it abandoned. Thanks, John Gainer

I was not in the Korean War but served six years in Korea during the post Korean War Era. I flew recon mission over Korea during the Pueblo Crisis and was their during the AX Murder and Tree Cutting Incident. The war never really ended all the time I was there incidents occured frequently along the DMZ and the North Koreans were constantly trying to send infiltrators into the south. I was in high school during the Korean War and many of the upper classmen went to Korea upon graduation and some did not come back. We had a plaque in the lobby of the school in their memory. We must not forget the heroes of our wars who went where sent by their government and gave their all serving their country. Keep up the great job you are doing. End Section: Go to Top

Also very, very glad to hear about the Korean War Project and focus on what is being called the "Second Korea Conflict". I was in Korea in 1970-71, at the tail end of what Major Jenerette has described as the DMZ war. I was an "instant" NCO, having civilian certification as an X-ray tech, with the 121 Evacuation Hospial. At that time the 121 was at ASCOM. Later in my tour we moved the 121 to Yongson, in Seoul. While at ASCOM we had a lot of combat casualties. This would have been in the fall of 1970 and winter of 71. We thought they were from exercise accidents and over flow from Viet Nam. In retrospect neither makes much sense. Only thing that does is that there was a lot of action going on around the "Z". Also, we saw a pretty big demonstration of fire just to the north of our compund. Looked for alll the world like a fire fight. We thought it was just some kind of training excersize. Later the rumor mill said it was a ROK division after some North K's. This would have been in October of 70 North of the Im jim River. (I think, we were not allowd to have any maps at the time). I have since learned that the 121 was about 20 miles south of the DMZ and a little North of In'chon. I couldn't verify any of this as fact. I spent a year+ there and couldn't tell you exactly were I was except when when we were in Seoul. Even then I have never seen Yongson Compound on a map.
