The Platoon was made up of elements of the 7th Marines, 11th Marines, and Amtracks. I served with the 2nd Battalion 11th Marines in Korea during 1953-1954 and with MACS3- 1st Marine Airwing in Korea during 1956-1957. I could certainly identify with the statement about the telegram or the unexpected visitor! The platoon's mission was to hold off any advance of CCF forces if they "jumped off" until units on the other side of the Imjin river could mobilize. Those were some interesting days! I have several other "war stories" ,but I wont bore you with them (at least not yet!). Thanks for the chat! john h

I then transferred the 1st Provisional Demiliterized Zone Police Company where I was a platoon sergeant of a reconnaissance platoon that patrolled the DMZ. Regarding the post shooting DMZ period; The 1st Provisional DMZ Police Company was charged with the patrolling of the former western front line from Panmunjom to the Hook, a former British Commonwealth Division position. The section of front we patrolled was 28-miles in length and was 2000 meters deep. I don't know if it is true or not, but I was told at the time that the Marines were the only unit that patrolled right up to the demarcation line as opposed to the southern boundry of the DMZ. I think it had something to do with our proximity to Panmunjom and the Truce Corridor and the large prisoner of war camp operated by the Indian Army. We had to pass through the camp to get to several of our checkpoints. We also escorted the prisoners during the Big Switch operation, where they chose where they wanted to go, back to North Korea or China, or to Taiwan. We didn't have the firefights that occured later in the 60s and 70s, but we did have casualties from mines and accidents. The winter was especially dangerous because of the treacherous, icy mountain roads which we had to drive to get to our patrol bases situated on some rather bleak mountain tops. End Section: Go to Top

As I began browsing the site memories started flooding in on me. I went back to my pictures and information I kept in those day remembering great friends and exciting times. I came to be with the Wolfhound Regiment in Sept of 1953. In Fort Ord we were assigned to a carrier company, divided into four man buddy teams that shipped across the Pacific together on the USS Walker. My group, which included Sgt. George Stampfli, Cecil Copeland, and Fred Raphael, ended up in George Company. At this time we were the first group to be added to the war weary veterans, many of whom were ready to return to the states. My company was located on the DMZ and our particular platoon had responsibilities of a hill over looking the DMZ. As the peace talks wavered we were often called to full alert with a double supply of ammunition and the instructions to always have your ‘steel pot with you’. Our company commander, as I recall, was a Capt. Taylor, the son of General Maxwell Taylor. Our job was to patrol the DMZ, build bunkers, dig trenches, and a variety of other unpleasant duties. I was fortunate in that I played football, our company which won the battalion, beat the red battalion but lost to special troops(a bunch of ringers) and I was also on tdy to play regimental basketball. The mighty Wolfhounds won the 25th Division championship under the coaching of Sgt. Tom Dee. Names of the players were Jim Thayer, Ambus Horn, Milt Highberger, Doc Gavin,George Latter, Paul Womack, Richard Ferguson, Whalen, Peterson, Sasseville, Van Gordon, Eller, and myself. George company moved south to Camp Hovey in March of 1954. The conditions were much more modern than those of the line, showers were a luxury we really appreciated. We spent our time here primarily in training and usually kept normal hours instead of all the night patrols and staying in bunkers as we did on line. In October the Lightning Division left Korea for beautiful Hawaii. It was a difficult trip in that we went through a typhoon battered ocean. When we reached Schofield we were assigned to Quad ‘D’, I think. I didn’t get to spend much time there as I had a knee operation at Tripler Hospital. I returned to George Company and was shortly sent home as my two years were up. By the way, our First Sergeant still owes me twenty dollars, with interest after forty-tree years I’d be rich. Our company commander at this time was Lt. Frey. Dick Purkerson 27th Infantry Regiment George Company 9/53 to 4/55 email dp51@teleport.com End Section: Go to Top
