1st Provisional Platoon

Perhaps as an item of interest regarding the DMZ. After the
signing of the Armistice on july 27 1953 , I was assigned to the
1st Provisional Platoon, the first of the DMZ watchers. We
occupied outposts Boston, Martini, and Cherry Herring. The Platoon
was made up of elements of the 7th Marines, 11th Marines, and
Amtracks.

I served with the 2nd Battalion 11th Marines in Korea during
1953-1954 and with MACS3- 1st Marine Airwing in Korea during
1956-1957.

I could certainly identify with the statement about the telegram
or the unexpected visitor! The platoon's mission was to hold off
any advance of CCF forces if they "jumped off" until units on the
other side of the Imjin river could mobilize.

Those were some interesting days! I have several other "war
stories" ,but I wont bore you with them (at least not yet!).
Thanks for the chat!

I was with A Battery, 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, First Marine Division
for the last 6-months of the war. I then transferred the 1st
Provisional Demiliterized Zone Police Company where I was a platoon
sergeant of a reconnaissance platoon that patrolled the DMZ.

Regarding the post shooting DMZ period; The 1st Provisional DMZ Police
Company was charged with the patrolling of the former western front line
from Panmunjom to the Hook, a former British Commonwealth Division
position.

The section of front we patrolled was 28-miles in length and was 2000
meters deep. I don't know if it is true or not, but I was told at the
time that the Marines were the only unit that patrolled right up to the
demarcation line as opposed to the southern boundry of the DMZ.

I think it had something to do with our proximity to Panmunjom and the
Truce Corridor and the large prisoner of war camp operated by the Indian
Army. We had to pass through the camp to get to several of our
checkpoints.

We also escorted the prisoners during the Big Switch operation, where
they chose where they wanted to go, back to North Korea or China, or to
Taiwan.

We didn't have the firefights that occured later in the 60s and 70s, but
we did have casualties from mines and accidents. The winter was
especially dangerous because of the treacherous, icy mountain roads
which we had to drive to get to our patrol bases situated on some rather
bleak mountain tops.

to stop them when they did.

So i guess i was right up front on the Dmz., i know it was one of the
coldest places i!ve ever been in and have no disire to ever go there

Looking forward to hearing from these or anyone who served when I did.

There was ONE reg. on the dmz north of the river and two in reserve
south of the river we used to rotate I forget how long we stayed north
of the river I think it was 3 months.

I see now that the VFW alows anybody who served in Korea to join but I

Enjoy exploring the site. I also served in Korea, arriving Jan. 16, 56
departing Apr.16,57.

Although I have seen many other units who served in Korea, I have
failed to find much about the 19th Inf Regt. 24th Div.during this era.

We also were on the DMZ across the Imjin River via Freedom and Libby
Bridges. At this moment in time, Mar 56 we replaced the 34th Inf Regt.
and relieved them of their title of being the only US Military front
line unit in the world.

I was with the Hqs Co 1st Bn S-2 section I&R, we manned the Libby
Bridge, OP Nina and Cherry Herring,re-porting data of the Chinese
Communists Forces, patrolling and setting-up blocks to apprehend persons
who were infiltrating to South Korea.

Sept. 56,I was reassigned to S-2 1st Bn located near Libby Bridge. I
beleive after I rotated the 1st Cav took our positions. If any of your
readers who served with the 19th Inf during this time, it would be nice
to see their posting. Keep up the good work.

Yours Truly,

Hi - I served with 45th & 24th Inf. Div from August '53 to December 54.

1st assignment was with 45th replacement company near C'hunchon, thence
as cadre at 24th leaders school south of Yang'goo, thence to motor pool
at division HQ ( Camp George ?). Have many memories of the experience
and am now collection 45th & 24th memorabilia. I am sure that
a return visit would shock me - we always drove down very dusty roads.
Would like to reconnect with some of my old buddies.

It was really a surprise to find my old outfit on the net. As I began
browsing the site memories started flooding in on me. I went back to my
pictures and information I kept in those day remembering great friends
and exciting times. I came to be with the Wolfhound Regiment in Sept of
1953.

In Fort Ord we were assigned to a carrier company, divided into four man
buddy teams that shipped across the Pacific together on the USS Walker.
My group, which included Sgt. George Stampfli, Cecil Copeland, and Fred
Raphael, ended up in George Company. At this time we were the first
group to be added to the war weary veterans, many of whom were ready to
return to the states.

My company was located on the DMZ and our particular platoon had
responsibilities of a hill over looking the DMZ. As the peace talks
wavered we were often called to full alert with a double supply of
ammunition and the instructions to always have your ‘steel pot with
you’. Our company commander, as I recall, was a Capt. Taylor, the son
of General Maxwell Taylor. Our job was to patrol the DMZ, build
bunkers, dig trenches, and a variety of other unpleasant duties.

I was fortunate in that I played football, our company which won the
battalion, beat the red battalion but lost to special troops(a bunch of
ringers) and I was also on tdy to play regimental basketball. The
mighty Wolfhounds won the 25th Division championship under the coaching
of Sgt. Tom Dee. Names of the players were Jim Thayer, Ambus Horn, Milt
Highberger, Doc Gavin,George Latter, Paul Womack, Richard Ferguson,
Whalen, Peterson, Sasseville, Van Gordon, Eller, and myself.

George company moved south to Camp Hovey in March of 1954. The
conditions were much more modern than those of the line, showers were a
luxury we really appreciated.

We spent our time here primarily in training and usually kept normal
hours instead of all the night patrols and staying in bunkers as we did
on line. In October the Lightning Division left Korea for beautiful
Hawaii. It was a difficult trip in that we went through a typhoon
battered ocean. When we reached Schofield we were assigned to Quad ‘D’,
I think.

I didn’t get to spend much time there as I had a knee operation at
Tripler Hospital. I returned to George Company and was shortly sent
home as my two years were up.

By the way, our First Sergeant still owes me twenty dollars, with
interest after forty-tree years I’d be rich. Our company commander at
this time was Lt. Frey.
