The MD Chapter Korean War Veterans plan to attend his burial.

Maybe some of his unit members would like to know this. I
understand his remains were identified at CIL HI in Hawaii.
I can only assume that they were there for a few years being
identified. It was on local TV, but I did not see the announcement.

Gerald Gaston - Farmersville, Texas

I'm looking for a very good friend who served with me during 1946-48 in
the 9th Infantry, 2nd Division, at Ft. Lewis, Washington. I was
discharged in June, 1948 while Sgt. Gaston remained in the service and
served in Korea where he was wounded while drawing maps of North
Korea.

I do not know if he was still attached to the 2nd Infantry Division
at that time or if he had been transferred to another division. He was
probably transferred (or possibly discharged and recalled) as he was a
First Cook in C Company of the 9th when I last saw him. I believe he
was in North Korea before war was officially declared.

Gerald Gaston came from the small town of Farmersville, Texas and,
after being discharged from the army, returned to the Dallas, Texas
area.

I have no further record of him. Can you help?

Thanks for your assistance.

wounded at kunuri during the withdrawal from the border of

the confusion at that time was bad. after being sent to the hospital

everyone that i knew was no longer with the unit to include an

there is a book called "second to none". this book reports fairly

Looking for my father' name. He was MIA then status changed to POW.
Died while POW 2/15/51 while in the hands of the Chinese.

Name Iva Brown Tadlock, home state was Oklahoma. Was stationed at
Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, when he was sent to Korea.
Surgical Technician with MASH unit.

Note: he died at the Mining Camp

More: You also mentioned to me at the time that he was "wounded" and
captured at the battle of Kunuri. Are there any other data base files
that have information as to his capture? I have written for POW records
at Fort Meade, MD. They were prompt with an answer which my husband,
who is an attorney, was the only person who could even remotely
understand what they were saying. My husband said the POW records did
exist but they weren't going to let me have them. They did say I
could appeal their decision. They have forwarded my request for records
to the NPRC in St. Louis.

He is buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Tx.
That was our home when he left for Korea. It was all handling so very
indifferent when my mother got her first telegram saying my father was
missing. A year or two later another telegram arrived saying he died
while a POW. About 2 years after that another telegram arrived saying
his remains were enroute to the US and to make arrangements for his
burial. Most everyone who has posted a message on the KWP says their
father was MIA or POW that died while in camp.

Robert was adopted as a baby by Howard and Lucile Angevine. They were
good friends of my grandparents. After some of the POW's were returned
Howard contacted a returned POW who was held at the same camp as
Robert.

The returned POW refused to tell Howard any information about Robert
and according to my mother, Howard never spoke of Robert again.

Howard and Lucile have since passed away, as have my grandparents.

Text of article in the JACKSON CITIZEN PATRIOT dated January 28, 1954.

SGT. ANGEVINE DIED IN PW CAMP, SAYS U.S.

Sgt. Robert H. Angevine, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard C. Angevine,
235 W. Palmer, reported missing in action in Korea since Dec. 1, 1950
died in a prison camp later that month his parents have been notified
by the Defense department.

Sgt. Angevine, a radioman in the infantry, entered military service
Jan. 13, 1949. On Jan. 10, 1951 his parents recieved a telegram stating
that their son was missing in action.

Sgt. Angevine was graduated from Jackson High School in 1948 and
previously had attended the Bloomfield, T.A. Wilson and West
Intermidiate schools. He was employed by the Acme Paint Co. for a
brief period before entering military service.

Surviving in addition to the parents is his grandmother, Mrs. Erma
Joris of Jackson.

I would like to donate these items for display somewhere as Howard has
no living relatives. Can you supply a fitting memorial? Also Howard's
remains were never recovered.

There is one other question I have. If soldier died in a POW camp what
was the North Korean policy on disposition of remains?

Thank you for your time and any answers you can give me would be welcome.

A country boy and quite backward.. he married too young to someone

parents. I was three.

With no jobs around for a man with no education and living in the
country, he jumped at the chance to go into the Army and improve himself
for our future. He was trained to be a Medic and his diploma was sent
home with pride smeared all over it.

He wrote home and told of his plans to continue his education in the
health field. He had found something that interest him and he discovered
that he was someone important to his society. He was growing up fast
and he was excited about his furture.

Then the War came... he was sent to Korea, but still his letters came
regularly and he talked about his plans for the two of us when he
returned.

He wanted his car ready when he came home. He said the two of us would
need it. He said he'd be home for Christmas. He wasn't.

My Daddy died so very hungry and so very cold and so very sick. He
died in a Death Camp that was so terrible that few can even imagine the
terrors there. He died not knowing that I would love him forever and
miss him with all my heart for the rest of my life.. I was too young to
tell him.

He died with out knowing the beautiful grandchildren he had coming.
My son who I'm told is so much like him...The Great Grandchildren are
here now and he didn't even imagine them.

But I tell them about him every chance I get. They're too young to
know and they sometimes refuse to listen, but one day..all that I've
said will come to their memories and the things I've written for them
will be found and they will know about this man that I still grieve for
this man I still call Daddy.

In Able co. BAR-man,then squad leader (think it was 2nd squad).

Have had an air taxi in Alaska the last 30 years. I remember
my asst. sqd.ldr. was named Kiepert, pretty sure plt. Sgt. was
Shaw, had a good friend named Thibedoux, and a lot of others
who's names have faded but not their faces.

I would like to hear from anyone who remembers. There was a
man named Wise..not in my platoon..who was killed near me.

He had a popless grenade hanging from his pocket that went off
inside his coat....might be the one mentioned in your "looking
for' column.I don't remember the date but we were reinforcing
the Korean Whitehorse Div in reserve if anybody can add to that.

So Wise was in the 1st Batt, and maybe even in Able Co. that I saw
killed, but I don't know if there was another wise in 2nd Batt. but
I doubt it.

On 6 Oct 1952 the 1st platoon(that was us) went into blocking position
behind a ROK outfit while they were fighting at Whitehorse Hill, and
that on the 10th the 2nd platoon made an attack up the ridge of the
T-Bone, and it looks like we moved up, though still behind the ROKs.

Anyway, Wise was killed on the 11th, and there was a man named Wise
who was killed near me, moving up the hill ,when a popless grenade
went off inside his jacket. We weren't in combat, just moving our
position up, so this was pretty sudden and unexpected and we considered
it a freak accident. I think now this was the answer; but wouldnt
want to say for sure in case there was another Wise in the 2nd platoon
who may have been a casualty but it would be quite a coincidence.

If I can get in touch with Carla someday, and she has a letter from
him from then, maybe we can pin it down a little closer. The man I'm
talking about had to be in our platoon, and maybe even Able Co.

Just for your interest, we later were on the T-Bone,2500 yards in
front of the MLR, on either Eerie or Arsenal(whichever was out the
farthest!) for 3 weeks. We didn't have it bad although of course we
were scared out there but weren't hit by troops ,just lot's of artillery
fire and sniping; but were relieved by the 7th Div, and they got hit
really hard and over-run with casualties and prisoners taken, so we felt
we squeaked through that one!

Mostly we did night patrols out around 3 Sisters and the really
dangerous part would have been to get lost and try to come home through
the Thai regiment that was attatched to us .

I am writing this for my grandmother. My husband Charley B. Ireland left
Fort Lewis Washington with the medical corps 9th Infantry Second
Division in July of 1950 for Korea. He was a Technical Sargeant.

He was missing in action action for 31 months when I was notified that

I would appreciate any information from anyone who knew him.

As to his location when he became a casualty I found the following in
Roy Appleman's book SOUTH TO THE NAKTONG, NORTH TO THE YALU
(June-November 1950)

THE FIRST BATTLE OF THE NAKTONG BULGE Page 303

That night, 11-12 August, North Koreans built up their roadblock east of
Yongsan to greater strength and extended it to a point three miles east
of the town. A staff officer awakened Colonel Hill before daylight to
inform him that the enemy had ambushed several ambulances and trucks two
miles east of Yongsan. Although hard-pressed at Cloverleaf, Hill
immediately ordered F Company, 9th Infantry, out of the line there and
dispatched it together with a platoon of mortars to attack the roadblock.

The 15th Field Artillery Battalion helped by turning some of its guns to
fire on it.

If you can find or know the names of any other veterans from his unit I
would like to contact them.

He joined up with the 2nd Inf Div at Port in Washington State. He had

He immediately upon arriving at Port, was assigned to Co A, 9th Regt,

once in arm and once in leg from July 1950 to March 1951.

I was assigned for over a week to carry 4.2 mortar ammo up to the front
lines for the HEARTBREAK RIDGE offensive. I had come to CHUNCHON at the
railhead on the 23rd I believe. The Division attached about 25 of us
young infantrymen to be ammo carriers and we were assigned about 5 or 6
South Korean "choggie" boys to help.

We carried 3 rounds of 4.2 at 25lbs each on the trip up the mountain.
I finally joined G Company, 9th Inf Reg about the 2nd or 3rd of Oct 51.

We were on top the hill at HEARTBREAK RIDGE. The 9th had relieved the
23rd about the end of Sep and moved into their positions. The whole
Division was moved to reserve for replacements and resupply. When I
joined the company, it had a strength of 27 men we were told.

The group that came with me brought the strength up to just over 50 men.

In October while in reserve, we were brought up to full strength of
about 200 men. That is another story. If you are interested, I have
about 100 photos I took during Sep, Oct and Dec of 1951 plus several I
took of the company the next spring as I was being rotated back to the
