8055 M.A.S.H

I served briefly - spring of 1952 - in the 8055 M.A.S.H near Uijongbu.
Attended a reunion in 1990 in Lancaster, Pa.I was a 4405 clerk typist.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who also served in a
MASH unit.

Thanks,

Thanks for your prompt reply to my inquiry re the 8055 M.A.S.H.The
8055 was the first such unit and was "operating" in Korea about a
week after hostilities broke out in June 1950.The first CO was Col.
Isaac ("Tuffy") Tender, a great man whom I met at a reunion in 1990.

He is sadly deceased. The 8055 moved about 27 times in the first
18 months of the Korean conflict, often setting up in school buildings
large rooms that served well as operating rooms.

Dr. Richard Hornberger (?), who was assigned to the 8055, wrote the
book that published in 1965 under the name "Richard Hooker." Then
the movie spin off in 69 and the TV show followed.

We had an Air Force squadron of 4 choppers with an Air Force Major
as CO for helicopter ambulance service. They were super guys and
saved many a GI.

It was quite an experience for a 19 year old not dry behind the ears. I
was clerk typist for the Medical Detachment headed by a 1st Lt. Lollar
from somewhere in Mississippi. I was most emphatically not a Klinger!
More a Radar type although I didn't have a teddy bear! I met a few
wonderful people at the 1990 reunion; would be interested in hearing
of others.

Oh yes, my uncle Ray, M/Sgt Ray Smith was First Sgt of a 3rd Div Artillery
battery located about a mile from our compound. He had rotated to the
States about three weeks before I got there. My uncle Roy (Ray's
twin brother) was a Major at the time and served as a battalion com-
mander in Korea.

Uncle Roy won a DSC in 1942 in N.Africa, was also in the invasion of
Sicily and went in on Utah Beach on D-Day, but that's another story.

Thanks for your help and for the Korean War Project.

Sincerely, Orin Smith Orin@DPMicro.net

8055 MASH

Dear Mr Barker,

We have common interest. My mother was a nurse in the 8055 MASH
and I have some very wonderful pictures of her, her friends, the MASH
and most importantly, my father. My Dad was also in the Army and
their romance spanned the Korean War.
They were married in Japan while they were both on active duty. I am
not sure how to do this, but if you would like some more info on them
(including pictures) for your site, I would be willing to help.

Here's my info: Denis S. Riley 20 West Concord St, Dover, NH

Please contact me if you know me from the army. No calls or
faxes from strangers!

I was with the 8055 MASH, mostly with the 1st cav and 24th Div's.
It was an 8th Army unit in the I Corps sector. We followed the front
up into N. Korea (and back). I left in August of 51.
