Korean draftees or recruits (most of whom were literally picked up off
streets of Pusan) to bring the regiment up to strength prior to
deploying to Korea from Japan in early November of that year. The 7th
was unique in this respect. I don't believe any other infantry unit had
as many Koreans as we did. Many of these men remained with the 7th for
the better part of the year and became good soldiers.

Patrick Sheahan - KIA 10/04/51

From: HSok@aol.com

Can it be verified that Patrick Sheahan, 7th Infantry, 3rd Division,
Company A, is listed as KIA in 1951. He and I were drafted from
New York City and took basic training with the 278th Regimental
Combat (Tennessee National Guard!) at Fort Devens.

In Korea, he was assigned to A Company, and I went to B Company.

We were both riflemen, and we occasionally got together in Korea, and
one night we went to the regiment for a movie (The Great Caruso) and
Patrick said to me in his heavy Irish broughe, since he had recently
emigrated from Ireland prior to being drafted, "Harold, I know they're
going to get me." On a subsequent visit, I was informed that he was
KIA, carrying the panel as point man in an assault. Help in verifying
that he is listed would be appreciated.

I have not been active in veteran activities since discharge, but now
am more interested now that recognition of Korea is moving out of
obscurity. Thank you.

Dear Mr Sokolsky ,

I was very surprised to read your E-mail , regarding whether Patrick
Sheehan was on the KIA list from Korea or not.

Firstly I would like to introduce myself , my name is Noel Sheehan ,
I work with Telecom Eireann ( Ireland ) and am at the moment on a
contract in Mozambique. I had consulted the Korean section of the
Army records to try to discover some details on the death of my uncle
Patrick ( Paddy ) Sheehan ,when I read your letter .

However for my part I did not discover any extra information
regarding my uncle's miliatry service.

In my father's family this was a subject that was rarely if ever
discussed .As you may have known my aunt Mary was also in New York
at this time , in 1951 my uncle was killed and later brought to
Ireland for burial. The only thing I do know is that my uncle was
awarded a number of medals for bravery ( one being the purple heart,
if I am not mistaken ). I would be very intrested in finding out
more about him.

Wonson to Task Force McLean

Dear Ted,
Thanks for your note. I was perplexed by the 7th Inf. Reg't notation so
I did some research in a book by Clay Blair,
"The Forgotten War: America in Korea, 1950 - 1953", Anchor Books,
Paperback Edition, Copywrite 1987.

The 7th Inf. Reg't. is identified on page 413 as arriving in Wonson,
Korea on 11-17-1950 accompanied by the 10th FAB. Along with the
15th Inf. Reg't and the 65th Inf. Reg't, Puerto Rican, the 7th Inf. Rgt.
was assigned to the 3rd Inf. Div. It may be that the 7th Rgt. was in
combat in the same sector as the 7th Inf. Div. but it does appear to be
organic to the 3rd Inf. Div.

A paragraph on page 421 of the book by Blair identifies a combat
formation comprised of part or all of the 31st Inf. Reg't. plus the
1st Bn. of the 32 Inf. Reg't. Normally this could be called the 31st
RCT but the inclusion of elements from the 32nd Inf. Reg't. caused the
name to be Task Force McLean" after the
commander Mac McLean.

Doyle Stanley Palmer

Thank you so much for responding so quickly to my request for help. My
father's name was Doyle Stanley Palmer. His birthdate is June 9, 1929.
His service number is US 54 033 986. He was in the Army from Nov. 28,
1950 until August 29, 1952. He was in the infantry. He was injured by
a granade (in the leg - I have seen the scars), but he does not remember
what hospital he was in. We tried getting his personnel and/or medical
records just for his records if for nothing else. Again, thank you so
much for your help. He (my father) has just now gotten to where he will
even talk about being in the war (because of the ill response he gets
and the bad feelings it brings).

I have been doing extensive study about the place where he was captured.
I have an article about it and a 1:50,000 map. of the area and some eye-
witness testimony from other 7th Inf. Reg. men. However, I do not have
any pictures of this place and I am sure there are many.

Hill 412 can easily be found--one leaves Seoul traveling north on the
main highway (with the railroad tracks also going north) through Uijonbu.
still continuing north....Hill 412 is located about 1/2 mile south of the
38th Parallel.

It is just left (west) of the highway/railroad tracks (and southeast of
the village of Tong-mangni, also almost due south of Hills "287 and
283".

I certainly would like to have some pictures from atop this hill. My Dad
was trying to get off this hill when it was attacked at 7:00 a.m. that
morning. He was award the Silver Star for helping a group of men to
evacuate--he was the only American soldier who did not make it off the
hill. Pictures from atop the hill would help me understand what happened
more fully.

Any help you can give this request would be appreciated. I have queried
many from the 7th Inf. Reg. however, I don't believe anyone has found
any such photos yet. Also, I understand that the 1 Cav. took this area
in May 1951.
