1st Lt. Donald Arnold
My father, 1st Lieutenant Donald Dewey Arnold Jr. was killed on October
3, 1951. His service number was 01341065. My Mother was also in the
service and is still alive.
She was a captain in the WACs and is Faye S. Arnold serial number L143.
Can you aid me in getting any information about him. My mother and I
would both appreicate you help. I wish I'd known others in the service
in Korea connected with him, for I've always wanted to know as much about
his death as possible. Wish we could have attended the momument ceremony
in Washington. Also let me know of anything I could do to help.
Thanks,

I have found out that on October 2, 1951 my father was West
of Yonchon Korea, near the Imjin or Imsin River. He took
off his Patch of the 1st Cav. Divsion from his field jacket
and sent it home to us. He did this prior to the attack of
an area South West of Chorwon Korean. He led what he called
in letters to us the best damn platoon in the Army.He was
killed the next morning, October 3, 1951. Before this he in
the Army he had been a instructor at Fort Dix, and also Fort
Bliss where he was in charge of rehabilitation training
soldiers.
My daughter Jessica Abrams-Arnold is now in the US Army MPs
and has just been sent Pusan Korea. She and I have talked
often of him, and what might of been.
Thanks again for your selfless work in having such a site on
the net. It is greatly appreciated.

Dear Hal,
I would appreciate it VERY MUCH if you can find out if the two men
listed below are still counted as MIA. I have carried the knowledge for
44 years that these men are dead. I tried two days after the firefight
in which they died, to get our First Sergeant to allow me to identify
their bodies. The NK had taken their dogtags.
I was not allowed to identify them because I was an enlisted man.
Almost 6 months later I was wounded. I have thought about these two
men almost every day since they died. Can you help?
They are:
Geraghty, William R. Pvt. RA12338378
Sorenson, George A. PFC RA17264751
Both men were members of Co.K, 5th Calvary Regiment, 1st Calvary
Division They both died on or about Sept. 13, 1950.
I never could bring myself to try contact their families. After all I
was alive and their boys were dead. How do you explain that.
Thanks,
TED HOFSISS
(more from KWP)
Both men were declared KIA soon after the 12th. This indicates that a
team did get to them. We cannot attest to the recovery of bodies. - ed

I am pretty sure that the 5th Cav. was in reserve on April 15,1951.
I do remember going on a tank patrol just before Easter, the patrol
was 17 miles and we ended up at the Chunchon Valley. There was only
three shot from the lead tanks, I think they were fired at the Chinese
trucks that were picking up their machine gunners for their pull back.
I do remember the slaughter that took place shortly after Easter. I
think we were told that the enemy had suffered 75,000 dead.

He last reported to roll call on July 18, 1950, and the family was

Shortly thereafter, another telegram came that said he was MIA.
We do have reason to beleive that he was taken prisoner. My

Mr. Barker,
My father's name 1st Lt. William H. Adams and he served 5th Cav
Rgt(Inf) 1 Cav Div. Thank you for responding to my request.
Is there anything more to relate, like where was he a P.O.W. or was he
killed during the mission, and where was he captured.
I've always heard different stories from family or people who served in
Korea but no real facts about my father. If there is anyone who fought
beside my father or had contact with him please E-Mail me at
shiftypeaks50@juno.com.
Your help would be greatly appreciated as I was a year and a
half old when my father left for Korea.
Sincerely,
Greg Adams

I would to like to hear from anybody that I knew .Also I have some
pictures that I took on top of some of the hills of some of the men. I
found a camera with a full roll of film in it in a bed roll.As the
soldiers know at that time every thing we owned we carried on our backs
or in our pockets. Someone new must have put the camera in the bed roll.
We never slept in the same bed rolls. We would usually attack a new hill
just about every day. We would cary the bedrolls on our backs until we
got fired on then drop them. The cooks and supply personnel would pick
them up. When we secured the hill usually late that night ,one of our
company would have to go down and guide a carrying party up the hill
with our bed rolls and food.Every body dreaded this ,because we had to
fight our way up tall hills, and everybody was dead tired.
Anyway I have pictures that might be precious to some one out there.
I was only 17 and I cant remember their names.

Dear Hal and Ted,
I find myself returning to the KWP pages over and over. I would like to
volunteer to do whatever I can to help this project, the people involved
in it and the people who will use it to better their own lives and an
understanding of what went on during the "Korean Conflict". I have a
lot of memories and am probably at the stage in my life where I can
finally share some of them. Tell me what I can do.
I spent exactly 6 months in Korea. I and a thousand others landed at
Pusan, August 24, 1950. After 6 months combat, I was wounded on
February 22, 1951, and flew to Japan, on February 14, 1951. My unit
was King Company, 5th Cav. Regt. 1st Cav. Div.
----more from Ted Hofsiss to KWP---------
Ted,
Thank you, my friend! Any body who could and would do what you did for
me in such a timely manner is an instant friend. I tried several times
to get this information thru government channels but had no luck.
Mostly my inquiries were ignored.
William R Geraghty was from Jersey City, N.J. His brother was a
detective on the Jersey City Police Force. I can't remember his first
name. Geraghty was called "Willie". We were in the same squad.
George A. Sorenson was from West Virginia, I believe. He was a runner
for the 1st Platoon (our platoon), Hq Section.
They were both killed side by side and next to me in an attack on Hill
174. I saw their bodies two days later in the same place I had left
them when we aborted the assault. I was told that my ID was no good
because I was not an officer.
I wondered all these years if their families thought they were MIA. I'm
glad to finally know they were not. Don't be too surprised at the
apparent discrepancy in the dates they are listed as KIA. The day
I tried to ID my friends, the marines landed at In'chon. We began
the "breakout of the Pusan Perimeter" the same day. Their bodies
may not have been taken off the hill until the 23rd. We were just short
of chaos at that time.
Come to think of it we were like that most of the time.
Before I go, my unit, 3rd Battalion, 5th Cav. Regt., 1st Cav. Div., was
one of the units that broke the perimeter around your dad's unit, 23rd
Regt., at Chipyong-ni, one week before I was
wounded.
Small world, huh?
Thanks again!
