PFC Frank J. DiPino

Ted, I would like find someone who may have served or known my uncle in Japan or Korea. He was MIA in the town of Kochang on July 29, 1950 and never heard from again. His name was PFC Frank J. DiPino, RA 11 165 706, originally from New Haven and East Haven, CT. He was 23 years old, serving with the 24th Infantry Div, 34th Infantry Regiment, Company I, 3rd Battalion. He joined the U.S. Army on Aug. 3, 1948, was stationed in Sasebo, Japan and sent to Korea in early July 1950. Officallly reported MIA at 6:00 AM July 29,1950 at Kochang. The following is a goverment report of that morning: On the morning of the 29th of July 1950, the enemy launched a large scale attack on the 3rd Bn, 34th Inf Regt and the 1st Bn, 34th Inf Regt. During the attack, the 3rd Bn was located in and to the west of the town of Kochang. Their Bn CP was located in the south-west part to Kochang. The 1st Bn was located to the east of Kochang. This attack forced the 34th Inf Regt to withdraw south-east on the Kochang-Peaksang-dong road. The 1st Bn setup a defensive position as a delaying action approx 1 mile west of the town of Kwonbin-ni. A fire fight ensued here with the 1st Bn withdrawing towards the town of Ansong-ni. If there is any other information I could give you, please let me know. Thank you very much for your time!! Andy Serio Email address ----Note: update from KWP on 10/5/96------from Andy Ted, I just wanted to let you know with the help of your internet site and links to other sites, I have been in contact with many members of his company. One veteran and my uncle were good friends, and others can remember him. I can't thank you enough for the results I have made, and new friends (by phone) I have met. They have provided me with quite a bit of information. I have a much better insight of the Korean War than ever before. New Hampshire; assigned to Hq, 1st Bn, 34th Inf, 24th Div; died in
prison camp 7 Aug 1951. CPT Nugent, retired as a Major, was assigned to
Hq Btry, 52d FA Bn, 24th Div; repatriated 1 Sep 1953; died at age 78 in

On behalf of my dear friend and neighbor, I write.

The Florczyk Family was notified in 1950 that their son and brother
PVT Edward S. Florczyk had died while captured in Korea. No
remains were recovered. I understand that numerous requests for
information from the military followed that notification.

Since that time, the family has wondered if it was possible that Edward
was still a POW in Korea?

Last month, after reading the Readers Digest publication of Johnson's
List, with so much accuracy accredited, they asked me to retrieve a
copy. Edward's name appeared on Johnny's List. Tears of grief and
relief were shed by all.

PFC Wayne "Johnnie" Johnson is truely a hero. He knew that what he was
doing was good and right. He created and suffered for his list, for the
families, for my friend. I don't know how to thank someone for
something like this. His courage and dedication can not go without
thanks. He should know how grateful this family is for all he has given
of himself, and the peace of mind he has given to them after all these
years.

Prior to that he was with the 32nd Inf. His letters are from Kumwha,

'Korea' and he does mention being in the "Iron Triangle".

He was eventually declared dead a few years later but his remains were

I am posting this for my dad. He is looking for information on a
Gilbert Martinez (spelling unsure). He was from Detroit.

He transferred from Company L 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Division in
July 1950. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks.

WAS ALSO IN KOREA AT THE SAME TIME IN THE 7TH AIR SHEILD DIVISION. HE IS
ALIVE AND WELL. HIS NAME IS VATS BOGGS.

IF YOU KNEW EITHER BOGGS BROTHER IN KOREA PLEASE RESPOND.

I NEVER KNEW HIM. BUT CAN'T HELP THINKING ABOUT HOW HORRIBLY HE DIED.

My mother has told me that my cousin Ken Shadrick was the first casualty
of the Korean war and that there was a story or picture of him in life
magazine.

He was killed while involved in an action with General Douglas
Macarthur.

Can you confirm this. Thank you for any assistance

Note from KWP: I notified Bill that the Life Magazine incorrectly
reported the incident. However, his death must be marked as one of
the early deaths of the war. Please correspond with Bill to let him
know of your knowledge of the Private..

More: after getting the info you sent me i also accessed the national
archives and found the info on the film i spoke of. Ken was in the film,
having been hit with machine gun fire. he was still alive at that point
as they showed first aid being administered to him. Gen. Macarthur was
on the film but in a different segment.

The text on the film states only that he was one of the first
casualties. I have also read a full account of the action that resulted
in his death.

Having served in the armed forces myself and narrowly missing
going to Vietnam in the early sixties I am proud to have had a cousin
named Ken Shadrick.

thanks

My name is Don Martin, the reason I am writing, is because my brother
was listed as MIA for a long time, then presumed dead.

His name is Herbert Oscar Martin. He was listed as MIA on 5 or 6
Sept 1950. I know he was stationed in Japan when the war broke out.

Please send information if you have any, ie if he was KIA where he is
buried etc. (his body was never returned.)

Thank You.
