191st CIC Det. was attached to 1st CAV div. from stART to finish
of the korean war, i was a member of an 18 man detachment, handling
counter intelligence for the 1st cav div. lt col loouis b.
trevathan was our commanding officer, initially .
we also took part in task force indianhead in pyonyang capital etc
Here is some additional data concerning the 191st CIC Det, attached
to the 1st Cav. Div., from july 18,1950, the eighteen man detachment
consisted of Lt.Col. Louis B. Trevathan, Donald E. Ryan, Eli Drakulich,
George J. Lewis, Norman L. Keatley, Arthur K. Bruhn, CharlesN. Kawata,
Gerard Sheehan, Wm. Turner, Don Wiseman, George Yokota, several others
and myself
We landed with the Division from ships on the east coast of korea, north
of Pusan, and worked our way to Taegue, holding the line until
breakthru north around November 50, the detachment usually had a three
men team attached to each regiment during the operation, all the way
to North Korea, Pyongyang and near the Yalu river. We had a team with
task force Indianhead, cleaning out targets inthe NK CAPITAL
We had many close calls, and sucessfully completed missions, receiving
unit commendation via GO #515,dtd 5 July 51. Luckily we all made it back
and rotated out of Korea after the 1st year, most returning to Japan
and the 441st CIC det there. thats about the best I can recall,
generally, except for some individual experiences .

John,
I read with interest your posting of 21 Jan 1998 re your tour of duty
with 1St Cav in Korea.I was drafted in Mar 51, 16 weeks Infantry Basic
Fort Jackson. The majority of training Company had college degrees. The
army didn't know what to do with us.I finally was interviewed for CIC
school at Fort Holabird,Md. and was accepted. Class B-116 from Aug-Nov
51.
Finally sailed from Seattle on Gen R.L. Howze early Mar 52.We dodged
typhoons and were on the water 17 days as opposed to normal 9 day trip
to Yokahoma. Joined 191CIC late March 52 at Camp Crawford, Sapporo
Hokaido, Japan. Attended CIC TS 441st CIC May- June 52.Back to Hokaido
and assigned to 5th Cav Reg at Chitose Camp 1. Each Regiment went back
to Korea during the prison outbreaks on Koje-do. 8th first followed by
7th then 5th last
Our CO when I arrived in Mar 52 was Capt Samuel Cooper who had his
family with him and was about to be rotated to the states. The only
other persons you might have known were Clarence Champion a draftee who
left in early Aug to be discharged, and Frank Caudill the Co Clerk.
Our new CO was Major Stanley Soltes. Our eighteen man detachment
consisted of Donald K.Abe a niesei (sic) who was moved to Wakanai at
the top of Hokaido. Alan Hunt from Elcentro Ca,Don Schmidt from St
Louis, Richard Dolejis from Chicago,Wayne Kroger from Davenport ,Iowa,
Bob Miller from St Louis,Orwan Kollewe from Utah, Ward Cornwall from
St. Louis, myself Dick Smith from Pittsburgh, Pa. a former State cop
from Fla,a red head from Chicago ,Capt Hashagen operations Officer, A
Warrent Officer and finally about Nov or Dec Lt Nord Gardner who had
been an instructor at Holabird . Gardner spoke fluent Japanese and was
promoted to Captain before I left . I have missed a few.
We had IPW people Hiroshi Yamauchi from Walnut Grove ,Ca Nabuo Koshiama
from Hilo Hawaii and Roy Shingu. A good friend was Sol Gottlieb from
Bronx a Russian linguist with ASA.
Other than the Officers, and Company Clerk,I think the rest of us
were draftees. I am quite new with the computor and would have posted
this on the Korean War page where I read your posting, but I dont know
how.
