Tank Company, 180th Inf Regt.

Late 1952 until Truce. Brought back POWS from
Operation Big Switch.

----more------

I was a platoon leader of Tank Co., 180th Inf Regt in Korea in the
latter part of 1952. I became Company Commander in early 1953, and
remained until my rotation points had accumulated shortly after the
truce. I was on line the entire period, as we had to support the
Phillipine BCT which did not have tanks of their own. It was a most
interesting experience especially the great push thru the Korean 20th
ROK Div down as far as ChunChon.

Stars and Strips (and other media) never reported how close the Chinks
came to pushing us all the way back to Seoul as truce negotiations
reached their climax.

I have written extensively about the Korean experience, and my return
visit in 1993. I also searched the Archives in Washington following
that visit and recorded a great deal of archival information from the
Command Reports.

I was drafted in Oct. 1950 and placed in thee 45th as a filler after the
activation of the Oklahoma National Guatrd. I joined the division in
Camp Polk, La. in Nov 1950.

I was originally in Co K 180th Inf Regiment. I went to Japan in one
of the early shipments and we camped at Camp Chitose on the old
Japanesse air base. Shortly after arrival on a Saturday morning roll
call I was told to report to battalion headquarters.

A group of us were interview by a captain from div headquarters. I was
told to report on Monday for transportation to Camp Crawford at Sapporo.

I was assigned on a tempory basis to Inspector Generals Office, as part
of a paper work inspection team.

After this work I was assigned to the Finance Section of Div Headquarters.
I, of course, went to Korea as part of one of the early groups through
Inchon I left Korea in early Septmember 1952.

I would like to hear from anyone in similiar time frame. If the 45th has
