Hi guys:

Think the ball may be rolling slightly on a 160th reunion in the L.A.

Got a response from Harry Nelson, who lives just about a half hour
north of here in Lancaster. He was a Guardsman activated in 9/'50, Item
Co. from Maywood. (Lt.Co. Benoit, 160th C.O. in Japan and Korea, had at
one time been their Co.C.O.) Served with the Regt. thru the first few
months in Korea.

He says about ten of them from the Co. had a get-together in L.A., but
he had never heard of the 160th reunions that used to be held. (Also
said he has been in touch with Richard B.)

A great source for information on the Army and the Korean War is a
series of books in five volumes called United States Army in the Korean
War. These are now rare books written by Walter G. Hermes. The second
volume is the only copy I have, and I picked up in an old bookstore for
20 dollars. Powell's Book Store in Portland OR is asking 75 to 80 dollars
for the second volume called TRUCE TENT AND THE FIGHTING FRONT. This
volume is the one I bought because it covered the time I spent with the
160 Inf.Reg, 40 Div. Korea 1952. I was in this unit from Jan.1951 to Dec.
1952.From Camp Cooke, CA to the Korean Front. You are doing a great
service to our country by your work in this Korean War Project.

Keep it up.

others would.

Understand Maj.Gen. Delk's book is out, or almost out. Do you know if
he lives in California? If he does, maybe we could get some real
publicity on his book, and the 40th, and the Korean War Project. Or even
if he doesn't.

Best regards,

Notes Excerpted from 160th Inf. Command Reports
May'52 Col. Frank Maerdian, Commanding

Terrain here typical of the country: long finger-like ridges extend to
the north from the MLR into a wide valley known as the Kumhwa-Kumsong
Valley, thru which run the main rail and highway arteries between the
two cities. Flat shelf-like paddies make up the valleys between the
ridges.

Weather extremely dry; dust prevelent.Principal tactical operation
continued to be patrols. An average of nine squad-size patrols
dispatched daily , with ambush, reconnaissance, and security missions.

Scout dogs being used to good advantage with patrols.

Tanks in platoon strength used successfully on three occasions. Tanks
moved rapidly to pre-selected positions forward of the outpost line and
fired HE and white phosphorous into known enemy bunkers and weapon
positions, utilizing their machine guns on enemy moving within the area.
(Noted that enemy artillery reaction to these "tank shoots" was reduced
from 30 minutes in the first instance, to immediate reaction in the
last.)

Total of nine air strikes during the period.

Air photo coverage satisfactory.

Light artillery Bn has performed in an excellent manner.

Replacing phased-out NG and rotation personnel has made apparent the
need for training of replacements. Training Center with cadre of veteran
instructors instituted. Five day course includes Field Fortification,
Combat Scouting and Patrolling, Auto. Weapons familiarization firing,
Mines & Booby Traps and Conduct of Attack on Fortified Positions.

POWs verify enemy has high morale.

Captured weapons include new automatic carbines (Burp Guns).

Most artillery fire received was sporadic, poorly aimed and
intermittent. Exceptions included several concentrations of 20 to 60
rounds, well massed and intense in volume. First verified use of 122mm
artillery.

Numerous T.L.O. "line crossers" have used the Regimental area for exit
and reintry. Processed as POWs until positive ID is made.

Alarming increase in the number of non-battle injuries from accidental
discharge of weapons. Recruits not completely familiar with their weapons
contributed to this.

Due to excellent relations with ROK regiment on the flank, a Korean
USO show was presented to American troops with very good results.

Tape recordings for men to send home has helped maintain high morale.

Many changes in command and staff personnel. (At present: 1st Bn CO,
Maj. William C. Boyd; Charlie Co. CO, Capt. William C. Holter.)

QM laundry system handled on a direct clothing-exchange basis. Results
not satisfactory: Men often receiving torn and worn-out clothing of the
wrong size.

QM Shower Unit inadequate for the number of men using it.

Storage area maintained 35 miles to the south at Chun-Chon.

Items in short supply: generators, immersion heaters and containers,
fire units for field ranges.

Post Exchange supplies such as cameras barely adequate. Candy,
cigarettes, tobacco and toilet articles continue to be issued as a ration
supplement.

Evacuation of casualties to Bn Aid Stations has been by hand. From
there, either by litter-jeep to Reg. Collecting Stn. or by helicopter to
8076 MASH.

Personnel remains received during May:

CRUZ, Amadeo A. PFC RA Co."G"
HEUER, William F. PFC RA HQ&HQCo.
MURRAY, Tobias Jr. PVT US Med.Co.

Hi Will (Brown)

I'm now on the internet at GARCIA1SG@aol.com. If you have stories
or pictures of 160th Infantry in Korea during the period '51 to '54,

I would like to put them in the book. My home phone is 916 363-5559,
and I live in Sacramento.

Thank you Dan Garcia

I had an unusual experience on Heartbreak ridge Dec 52. I was a platoon
leader with one of a pair of twins assigned to my platoon. The other
twin was assigned to the platoon to my immediate right flank.

Both were medics because they were drafted as conscientious objectors.
I received a call asking that my medic be sent to this other platoon
because they had a man "down" and they couldn't find their medic.

My medic responded and discovered that the man "down" was his twin
brother. He was dead when found by his brother.

One of the national news magazines reported this as the "encounter of
the week" The best that I can remember their names were Edward and
Edwin Reitz of Rockford[?] Illinois.
