George Woods: In 1940, shortly after moving into our new residence in Philadelphia, Pa, I was pleased to meet Dave. He was studying in preparation for his later entrance to the United States Military Academy. At first I thought he was pulling my leg, since by pure coincidence I also had the same ambition. Dave was an inspiration to me and I took great pleasure in following him throughout his tenure as a Cadet and later as a young officer in the US Army. I was at home when the notification of Dave's MIA telegram was delivered to my Dad, since the Armstrongs were not at home. It was a terrible blow to us all. I often thought of him through the years and remain grateful for the inspiration he left for me as I pursued my own career through West Point and later career as an officer in the US Army. I graduated with the Class of 1956 and later retired from the Army in 1983. Three of my sons and one of my grandsons have followed along as members of the Long Grey Line, two of which are still serving in the Army. So, Dave has been a strong influence in our lives, not that he was able to realize that during his lifetime. He is surely missed. I have lost contact with Dave's family and regret that I would have any leads that might be helpful at this late time frame.
