Comments: Corporal Hammond was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 187th Airborne Infantry Regimental Combat Team. On August 14, 1952, as a member of a six man patrol, his unit was ambushed and almost surrounded near Kumwha, North Korea. Although wounded, he exposed himself to enemy fire to direct artillery fire on the attackers. He continued until mortally wounded. He was known in his family as "Junior."
Son of Mrs. and Mrs. Lester Hammond of Quincy, Illinois.
