1. Death of Col. Duane (Bud) Biteman - 18th Fighter Bomb Wing
==========================================================

We are sad to report the death of a very good friend of the
Korean War Project.

Korean War Veteran, US Air Force pilot, Retired Col. Duane
(Bud) Biteman passed away on September 23, 2002 of natural
causes in his home of Bellevue, WA.

Services were held at St. Madeleine Sophie Catholic Church,
4400 130th PL. SE in Bellevue, WA 98006 Monday September 30,
at 12:00 PM.

Col. Biteman was, what is called, an "early adopter" of
Internet technology. He became an avid supporter of the new
website, the KWP, in 1995 and provided 37 of his copyrighted
and published stories about the US Air Force 18th Fighter
Bomb Wing, in Korea, for our use.

Col Biteman championed our website, alerting fellow 18FBW
men to its existence while helping to raise funds for the
site. His tireless work to promote the 18FBW, whose sister
unit was the 2nd South African Air Force Squadron, resulted
in the eventual development of the 18FBW website as a stand
alone entity.

Col. Biteman's son, Jim, writes:

"Dad has lived and breathed the 18th FWA for many years and
was extremely happy that there was interest in this great
organization from others. I am happy to know that the work
and dedication that he has put into this group has paid such
great dividends to so many.

Bud Biteman has finished his final approach and has landed
successfully at the pearly gates. He now can say he has
successfully completed the most important mission known to
man...life.

With warm regards,
Jim Biteman <

3. Colorado Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway Update

Editor note: The Highway intersects the Hiway 17 and 38th
Parallel in Colorado - Ted Barker

Bruce Salisbury <
bsalisbury@acrnet.com> writes:

Hello guys;

When I started searching for a ship's bell, for the Korean
War Veterans Memorial Highway, in Colorado, I never dreamed
that I would manage to gain access to the bell from my old
cruise ship, USS GENERAL PATRICK. I was a 16 year old kid,
when I stood on deck and listened to the loud tolling of
that bell. Now Colorado needs to make quick business of
getting paperwork, money and transportation together, to
acquire the bell, and install it in their monument, right on
the 38th parallel.

Sometimes a plan comes together. I have been all smiles.

Bruce Salisbury

- excerpt from email to US Maritime Administration: "One of
our ideas is to get a Ship's Bell, from a ship that actually
served in Korean Waters, during that conflict, to place it
inside a structure located right on the 38th parallel, where
it crosses Colorado Highway 17, and also to have a Log-Book
available, to receive the names of casualties. Then (under
close supervision), the bell could be tolled and the name of
that casualty called out."

Response from US Maritime Administration:

Mr. Salisbury,

The bell from GENERAL PATRICK is in our possession and could
be loaned to your organization on a long-term basis for
display purposes. What we would need from you is a proposal
as to where and how the bell would be displayed and made
secure. Your organization would also be responsible for all
costs involved in transporting the bell and setting up the
display. We would further require that you identify on the
display that the bell is on donation from the U. S. Maritime
Administration.

At your convenience let me know how you want to proceed.

4. Do You Remember?, Ann Lander's "Valentines for Vets"
==========================================================

The KWP received the following email:

Preface excerpt:
"She encouraged her readers to send them to Veteran medical
centers across the country. In addition to her primary
motivation-to show veterans that we care, the project was
also picked up in schools to show children the
accomplishments of our nation's veterans and what they have
done in support of our country."

I'm a research assistant for Rick Kogan, Ann Landers friend
and editor until her death. Mr. Kogan is writing a book for
William Morrow. It will be a portrait of Ann Landers that
will provide a legacy, but more importantly, it will tell
the story of how she helped people through her column.

I know she held the "Valentines for Vet" program every year
to show veterans how important they were to us and to thank
them. I wonder if it would be possible to talk to any
veterans who were touched by her sentiment or whose lives
were affected or changed because they saw, through these
valentines, that someone cared.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Sharon Barrett

Subject: Searching for Relative

Don't know if you can help me or not - but I have been
trying to find a relative of a buddy that was KIA near
Mag-o-ri Korea on 10 Oct 51 to give them his rosary, which
was given to me the morning he was killed. The following
info is all that I have been able to come up with on him:

CHARLES CASTORENA, US56062388, ENTERED SERVICE FROM LOS
ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA - MOS 4745 - Light Weapons
Infantryman - Born 1927 - served with KING CO., 8th
Regiment, 1st Cav. Division.

Would appreciate any ideas you might have on locating a
relative. I have kept this rosary for over 50 years, and
feel that it would mean a great deal to some of his family.

6. Technology update for our site users: spam and virii
==========================================================

Everyone has most likely been getting virus infected email,
in droves! Adding to that nuisance is the huge influx of
Asian commercial spam email which we have been reporting
about since February of 2002.

None of that garbage seems to be abating in spite efforts in
the technology sector to combat both spam and virus
infections.

The recent virii attack unprotected email and host
computers, using the address books and in box email or
documents to send out email purporting to be from one of the
persons listed in any email on that PC.

To protect yourself, use Anti-virus software and firewall
which companies like Norton and McAfee produce. Set your
programs to update the virus .dat files to DAILY.

Martin Markley of the 15th Inf Rgt, 3rd Inf. Div Assoc and
OP Harry Survivors Assoc. writes:

Golden Corral will again partner with the Disabled American
Veterans for a national Military Appreciation Night on
Veterans Day, Monday, November 11, 2002. From 5:00 pm until
9:00 pm on that date, all veterans and active duty
personnel will receive a complimentary dinner buffet at
nearly five hundred Golden Corral locations from coast to
coast. Already known as one of the finest family restaurant
chains in America, Golden Corral merits special commendation
for its unwavering commitment to those who have preserved
our nation's freedoms.

Last year, Golden Corral and DAV launched the first national
Military Appreciation night. The response was extraordinary.
More than 214,000 veterans and active duty personnel took
advantage of Golden Corral's hospitality and enjoyed free
