4. Finding the Families - Memorial Day Push
==========================================================

This is the second annual, formal, anniversary of the KWP Finding the Families initiative. Although the KWP has featured this informally for 7 years, the creation of our "target list" in July of 2000 more fully focused this project.

The Dpt of Defense Casualty Service Offices for each branch forwarded lists of  casualties for whom no family contact had been made up to July 2000.

Widespread media notice followed, thanks to The Associated Press article of  May 28th 2001 and a "live broadcast" on CNN on the next day.

Our pen pal, Megan Smolenyak , a noted genealogical researcher for DOD,  made notice of this program on May 2nd, setting the stage for the formal announcement in mid-May. Over 99,000 new visitors came to the site due to her kind help.

The Volunteer group headed by Ken Page (RIP Jan 2002), Ed Moynagh, Ray  Sestak, Sylvia Munoz, Art Lajeunesse, using the KWP data and online resources have pushed the envelope for contacting target families around the country.

Ann Landers helped even more with her column, dated June 9th 2001.

The DOD has acknowledged the wonderful input from the KWP and all of the pen pal site visitors. Hundreds of cases have been resolved for DNA sampling,  more pending. (Does not mean remains found, however.)

Please consider contacting your media outlets this year to keep the program in the minds of the public. Give them the site url and database connection

7. Korean War Service
==========================================================

One of our site visitors, Manny English, wanted us to be sure to let vets know that Korean War service time periods are considered from:

June 25th, 1950 thru July 27th, 1954. The truce was dated July 27th of 1953 but shifting to peacekeeping roles took a long time.

Movement of remains of servicemen who died in-country, wounded and the  Operation Glory operation continued from the truce through that end date and farther. Korea along the "wire" can still be a very dangerous place.

The Korean War Service Medal is authorized for that period of time.

On our Looking For section of the site, Hal and I demark the post-truce period as the DMZ period. Be sure to visit the DMZ Veterans section of the site.

John Pope makes notice that people may purchase long-awaited medals if they don't want to continue to wait, at:

8. Former POW Disability filing - Important
==========================================================

Please pass on to all Veteran groups! From Ed Slater:

From: "ed slater" <
eslaate@hotmail.com>

I am a National Service Officer for the EX POW.Org. and I met with the head of the regional office of the VA in St Louis yesterday.

We are trying everything we can to get POW' s in to file for the disabilities  that they deserve. Some are afraid to answer because they have 20 30  40 or whatever percent, and they are afraid they would lose that.

I will assure them that they would not. If the men would just contact me  in the evening, I will get them lined up with a N.S.O, close to them.

Feel free to use my phone number. 816 461-6818

10. Petition to rename Pope Air Force Base
==========================================================

Joe Noah has asked that we announce a move to rename the North Carolina Pope Air Force Base. Contact Joe with your input;

The Air Force often names air bases and air fields after the first aviator to be killed at or near the airport in question. Many air bases are named for famous aviators native to the area in which the air base is located. Some air bases have been renamed. There are only two major Air Force installations in NC: Pope AFB at Fort Bragg and Seymour Johnson AFB at Goldsboro.

Pope AFB was named for 1st Lt. Harley H. Pope, killed January 7, 1917 when his JN-4 crashed into the Cape Fear River near Fayetteville. Poor visibility and fuel exhaustion led to the fatal crash. Lt. Pope was from Indiana.

Seymour Johnson AFB is named for Navy Lt. Seymour A. Johnson, Goldsboro, NC native, killed March 5, 1941 in an aircraft accident in Maryland.

The Preddy Memorial Foundation seeks to have Pope AFB renamed Pope-Preddy AFB in memory of the Preddy brothers. A very brief sketch of their lives is below:

Major George E. Preddy, Jr., Greensboro, NC, is the top P-51 Mustang. His 27 aerial victories rank him eighth among American aces, sixth among Air Force aces, third among American aces from the European Theater of Operations, and first among aces from North Carolina. He also destroyed five enemy aircraft while strafing enemy air fields. George was killed on Christmas Day 1944 by Allied ground fire. His younger brother, 1st Lt. William R. Preddy, also a Mustang pilot, claimed two victories in March 1945 and was killed while strafing the enemy
airfield at Ceske Budejovice, CZ on April 17, 1945, just days before WW II ended in Europe.

If you agree with us, please sign our petition at:
https://www.Preddy-Foundation.org

Thanks,
Joe Noah

10. Kitchen Table Gang - and Vets Helping Vets
==========================================================

Editor Note: two initiatives dear to our hearts are the following:

A: THE KITCHEN TABLE GANG

From: Charles R. Taliaferro
chast@cnetech.com

We are having trouble getting the word out about the
Kitchen Table Gang and its project of providing a little
"R & R" to hospitalized veterans.

We depend on a grass-roots effort to get the word
out about us. To this end, I would greatly appreciate it
if you would visit our web site.

We just wanted to tell you about our project to assist
our military veterans with something to pass the time
away while they are in a VA hospital.

If you were ever wounded or had an illness and spent
some time recovering in a VA or military medical
facility, then you know of what we speak. Please visit
our new web site at:

https://www.kitchentablegang.org

B: Vets Helping Vets

Ray Walton and his great pal, Tosha, the dog, visit VA
Hospitals in California. Ray has a neat lapel pin of a golden
angel which he sells to help support his work.

Guardian Angel, Wear an Angel to guide you through the days
and nights, and brighten you life.

Your donation of US $4.00 goes to directly help vets.

Ray lives in Modesto and has been a great friend of the KWP.
His photos of his pal, Tosha, are heartwarming, she has a big smile.
