Hi Ted:When the 154th was shipped overseas we were equipped with F84 E's which were the latest of the straight wing F84's. We had those aircraft from July '51 in Japan until probably December of '51 when we were told to ship all of them up to the north end of the field to the 49th F/B Wing.
We were told we would be getting "new" aircraft. You wouldn't believe what showed up! We got old F84 B's and C's that had been in Germany.
These aircraft were really tired and in bad shape armament-wise. We heard that the outfits in Germany, that we got this "junk" from, got the latest swept wing F84-F's as replacements.
This must have made our pilots feel just great! It's as if the Air Force was saying "Here is some old junk we would like you to get rid of, we can't send you the new stuff it might get damaged." What a boot in the pants!
In my view that is "one for the books."
Don.
