Comments: It is with great sadness that the family of George Lincoln Mayes announces his passing after on and off illness throughout 2017, in the early hours of Monday, March 12, 2018, at the age of 89 years. George will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews. His beloved partner, Harriet Nauman, predeceased him in 2014. He was one of the Chosin Few, having served in the US Marine Corps (Staff Sergeant, 1st Marine Division, 1st Signal Battalion) during the Korean War. He was wounded by a mortar round during fighting on East Hill while counterattacking on 29 November with Col. Reginald Myers at Hagaru-ri. He was laid to rest on March 26, 2018 at the Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, CA.

Comments: I am lucky to say that my father is still living as is his best friend from Korea. He served
with the 1st Marine Division, 1st Signal (?)Battalion. I know that he served from October
1952-October 1953 and was somewhere near the 38th Parallel near the Imjin River. He
won't talk about his experience in Korea other than to discuss some of his friends or
what the country itself was like. He's never even discussed it with my mother and we
feel that we need to respect his privacy about it and not push too much. If anyone
else's father was part of this battalion or if anyone knows some more details about
what they did, it would be most appreciated.
