Comments: To All,
My 10 year old son asked me what Memorial Day means and if his late Grandfather is a war hero. I realized then there is so much about my late father I do not know, including his military service on the USS Missouri. I only know he was aboard the ship during the Korean War (possibly in the engine room) from a single picture my mother has of the entire crew. If anyone can share a picture, acquaintance, or story about my father William D. Atkins it would be so greatly appreciated. With all my regards on this very special day recognizing all of you - our real heroes.

Comments: By 1950, the U.S.Navy retained only one battleship in
commission, the 45,000 ton USS Missouri BB-63, radio
call sign; November-Charlie-Bravo-Lima, famous for her
World War II role in the Japanese surrender ceremony
in Tokyo Bay. The ship's orders to proceed to Korea in
the summer of 1950, followed an inauspicious beginning
to the year. (On 17,Jan.1950, steaming from Norfolk,
Va, the battleship ran aground on Thimble Shoals.
Captain William D.Brown plead guilty to negligence to
a naval court of inquiry, which ended Brown's naval
career.) The ship later in 1950, made it to the Korean
War, with Captain Irving Duke in command. On 14,Sept.,
the Mighty Mo opened fire with 52 16-inch shells off
of the Korean southeast coast, off Samchok. Two days
later on 16,Sept., USS Missouri fired nearly 300
rounds, to help a ROK division cross the Hyongsan
River, nine miles inland. On 21,Sept.1950, General
MacArthur came aboard the Mo for a visit. In Oct. Bob
Hope presented a show for the crew. The Mighty Mo was
the flagship for R/Adm.A.E.Smith, them R/Adm.J.M.
Higging, commander, Cruiser Div.-5, and later, Vice
Admiral Arthur D.Struble, commander of the Seventh
Fleet. Mo harassed the enemy on the North Korean east
coast, along the Sea of Japan. The ship gave the
Mitsubishi Iron Works in Chongjin, North Korea, 34
miles below the Soviet Border a vicious pounding. The
ship's 16-inch projectiles produced a crater of over
30 feet in diameter. The North Korean defenders of the
port of Wonsan would know the ship's silhouette well,
and be uncomfortably familiar with the gigantic red-
orange fireball from her muzzles, the unmistakable
roar of approaching rounds, and the concussive blast
of a high-explosive shell, as heavy as a small
automobile. The battleship was universally welcomed by
the ground troops. No Army, Marine, or ROK infantryman
who ever fought within 20 miles of the coast would
forget the gladdening experience of Mighty Mo's
legendary (earthquake salvos) fired in timely support
against a stubbornly held enemy position. How big is
the USS Missouri BB-63? If you could stand her on end,
she would be 332 feet taller than the Washington
Monument. Designing the USS Missouri, took 175 TONS of
blueprint paper, and building the ship required over
3 million man-days to complete the job.The Mighty Mo
was the last active battleship in the world. The USS
Missouri is now a museum and memorial, symbolizing the
end of WW-II, she rests with the USS Arizona,
symbolizing the U.S. entry into WW-II, at Pearl
Harbor, Hawaii. The USS Missouri BB-63 Awards.

Comments: I think that you have a very nice web-site. I have been out for quite a while. I have been trying and looking for any way to get in touch with more guys from my past in the Navy. I have heard from Danny Lafever, David Pondegrass, Roy Ferdin, Mr. Eaton, and a few times with RMCS RYE-an amazing man he is. I probably will never be able to get rid of any of the effects from the military, I have just learned to learn from the bad and be greatful, thankful for the good. I most definitely now after I am out and have aged much more appreciative of all the guys whether close or from a different command than myself that I had encountered. They really tried to deal with and work with me-hot head. Since 1988, I had lived in Panola Texas from 7/88-10/89 and then lived in Bossier City Louisiana for the next 15 years. I am married for the first and only time and I have 2 beautiful girls and 3 incredible grand children. Since 2005, after the 2 hurricanes down south I have been living in Dallas Oregon. I would love to hear from you out there.

I might add I was in Norfolk when the Muddy Mo was stuck in the Mud. Not making fun of you guys but I always recall this as history. I was about 17 or 18 yrs old then. I just missed getting on the Mo in Hawaii by one day. Long story.

Appreciate a reply to my question above. If I'm right on my timing at Inchon, then what was the exact date you arrivied?? Thanks in advance. Swabbie@wcoil.com.

Comments: I have just returned from my first visit to see the USS Missouri now resting in Pearl Harbor. My Dad served 3 1/2 years aboard this ship during the Korean War.
While on the ship, I had the opportunity to look inside the open hatch of the 16" gun turret #2. During the Korean War, one of the gunners had painted a map of the country of Korea on a water tank inside this turret. Each time one of the 16" projectiles hit their mark, he painted a small "explosion" to commerate the hit. I would like to pass along this info to any Korean War vets that the map is still there! I had a difficult time seeing it but was able to position my camcorder in such a way as to be able to get a video of it! It gave me goosebumps to know that my Dad was a part of this ship and her history! He was in radar and as 1 of the former gunners explained it to me, it was his job to pinpoint the targets for the gunners to fire upon.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to ALL the brave and heroic veterans for their service to our country. It is not lost on me that all the freedoms I enjoy today were fought for and protected by all these brave men and women. Without your unselfish service I would not have the freedom I do. God Bless all of you for taking care of our country and us! War is never without high cost but you met your responsibility with great courage. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!
