Comments: I was stationed in Everett less than one year. On reporting to
the ship in Hong Kong, I was assigned to the Forward Boiler Room
crew. For a 17yr. old, Hong Kong was a dream come true. When
the ship was replaced as Station Ship (Hong Kong)and arrived in
Yokosuka we were dry docked over Xmas 1950.

Patrolling in Korean waters, I remember that the ship's Boarding
Party captured a Junk and took its crew aboard as prisoners and
then the CO tried to sink the Junk. It was good gunnery practice
for the gun crews. They were unable to sink that wooden ship. We
were so far north and sunrise was coming soon, so the Skipper
ordered the junk cut adrift. I don't know what happened to the
junk or its captured crew. The last I saw of the crew, they were
huddled down and scared in an interior passageway.

The next incident occurred while the ship was one of two ships
assigned to draw fire from mainland Korea. They were, slowly,
circling an Island in Wonson Harbor as each ship came into firing
range it would fire one round per minute in order to get a
response. (I think this was called an Indian War Dance?)

The Everett finally got a response. It took one or two shells
amidship. The after 3inch Mount was hit and its crew was
critically injured and the smokestack was holed. Both ships
returned fire. The PF-8 was released in order to transfer, at
sea, the injured and dead to large ships of Task Force 77, they
had medical doctors on board.

After the transfer, we were directed to get repairs by a
destroyer repair ship in Sasebo Harbor. On arrival, I was
transferred to USS Prairie AD-15 and sent to work in its Boiler Room.

I stayed in the Navy and retired in 1971.

Worked in engine room underway and ran the small
boats in port. The Captain had an Admirals Barge on
the second trip to Hong Kong. I also ran the boat to
the P.A. when that guy got shot and killed. Those old
recipating main engines were sure hell to keep
running.

Comments: I'm Bill McIver. I was a MM3 on the Everett. Boarded her in Hong Kong in 1952. After about six months we left for Sasebo and limped in on one engine. Got 'er fixed up and went to Korean Coast. Spent a lot of time on "fish boat" patrol. I've always thought we were a part of the diversionary force that drew the North Koreans to the west side of the peninsula while the landing at Inchon was being made. I think we were shat at one night when we were patrolling up the northern Korean coast. I went home on emergency leave while the ship was in Sasebo. Returned to the ship in Hong Kong. Was sent back to the states for duty on the USS Colahan DD658.

Duty was great in Hong Kong but the old Everett wasn't much of a war ship--at least we snipes had a hellava time keeping her running. Remember we had no water for showers at sea. Hope to hear from you and swap some stories.

I was in the Navy from Nov 1950 to Sept 1954. 1st served on the USS Cape Esperance, 1951, the Everett 1952-53 and the USS Colahan DD 658 53 - 54.
