Comments: Served in 841st from Jan.54-Aug54. Electrician MOS but spent most of time at rock rusher or near runway trying to learn how to operate grader orD8. Most of time machinery was down awaiting parts from Japan. Memories: urinal pipe just outside tent door, air raid shelter trenches which served as home base for enterprising Korean ladies of the evening, military script exchange s which cost the aforementioned ladies of the evening a bundle, honey buckets, the overwhelming smell of kimchi, nice guys in our tent and last but not least, R&R in Japan. Not many alive that was there at that time but would enjoy hearing from you. Names I remember are Bangert, Erbst, Callahan,Osborn,Kech,Donahue ,Kowalski,Lipke,Boyd,Bailey, Hoffer, Keegan.Enjoyed the Australian beer parlor. Hope to hear from who were there at that time. Went over on. US. Gen. Walker and think we came back on a rowboat.

Comments: I served in the 841st EAB in Korea, first at Osan and later at Kunsan, from fall 1952 to fall 1953. I was Company Commander of C Company during the latter part of 1953. While at Osan my primary job was running the rock crusher operation, first on the night shift (very cold) and later on day shift. We had a very smart group of non-coms who came from very diverse backgrounds (races and ethnicity) and it was a pleasure to work with them. The fact that Osan Airfield is still in operation speaks to the quality of the work. I understand that President Obama was just there,

Comments: After basic training and armorer school at Ft. Dix, I was sent to K8 Air
Base, Kunsan Korea, and became a member of the 841st, to work as an
armorer, repairing weapons. I believe this was late February or early
March 1954. On the first evening with the 841st, the new arrivals (I
think about 40 of us) gathered for a meeting with the First Sergeant
and officers of the unit.
One of them, the Personnel Officer, a Warrant Officer named "Ridley",
and a very smart man, spoke and said that there were a number of the
new arrivals (paraphrase) that in civilian life did something other and
better than what the army had trained us to do. If so, please speak with
him and "perhaps we can do something for each other".
Well I did, and 3 days later, while repairing the trigger mechanism on
an M1, I was told that I will be working in the pharmacy at the base Air
Force hospital. The Air Force Pharmacist, a Sergeant named Sid
Johnson, was very happy to see me, and even happier when he saw that
I knew what I was doing, and he could go on R and R.
I came back to the USA to Beale AFB with the 841st in February 1955,
and worked in the base hospital pharmacy till my separation in
September 1955, when I went back to college.

The family of Ralph Meier is sad to give you the news of his death.

If you have stories to share about his 2 years in Korea and the Army ,
please email or call me and I'll make sure his family and friends get to
hear them too. His daughters remember him saying that he was his
unit's expert at hauling loads out of ditches-- because he'd learned
Navy knots from his older brother Hal, Ralph was the one who knew
how to splice snapped cables.

He was one of the happiest people I have ever known.

Sadly,

My unit Co B was assigned to rebuild the rock crusher and asphalt plant. I was also the first shirt for a time. I don't remember any names, just faces. Age does take it's toll. I spent another 28 years in the air force and retired in 1980. Loved every minute of it. Was also in vietnam from 1968-69. was also in WWII on merchant ships in the south pacific/atlantic.
