Comments: Assigned to 823rd right after leaving Sandia. Arrived shortly
after unit convoyed to Riley from Savanna, IL. Assigned to
maintenance platoon and worked in electronics section. Most of-
base free time spent in Manhattan.

After 823rd, was assigned to Nike Herc battery support fwd area
support shops at Ft. Sheridan, IL, and New Brighton, MN.

Can't say I enjoyed Riley, but did enjoy being with the guys in
the unit.

Comments: Question:-
On a Sampson Map some housing units are shown as being in Sampson's "Y" area. That area is EAST of Sampson's big incinerator and its "disposal yard." The map shows those housing units labeled as "190-XXX" and the like. They are across highway 96A on its WEST side, the Sampson side. If anyone knows anything about that housing area, possibly used by people on Seneca Ordnance Depot, I'd appreciate learning about it. Thanks

Comments: I joined the 823d in April 1961 after returning from duty with the First Cav in Korea. The advance party had just arrived from Seneca Ordnance Depot in New York. I was company clerk through April 1962 when my enlistment ended. I have many pleasant memories of the area - it was a whole lot more fun than Korea. If there is anyone out there from that era I'd love to hear from you.
