Comments: I joined the 822nd in spring, 1947 as an automotive machanic and became ncoic in spite of having only one stripe . . . rank was frozen during this period. I later went to the 8th Army Engineering school in Maizuru, Japan and became a Diesel and heavy construction equipment mechanic. In addition to road building and maintenance, our main mission was to enlarge Kadena Air Field to make it more suitable for B-29s. Non-fraternization was the rule and all villages were off limits. When the USAF was created in 1947, half of us were transferred to the USAF and the rest, me more included, were left in the army. It was about eight months before we had fresh water and could take a shower. Prior to that water was trappers in and we took helmet baths. We had no PX. During the last year, things got better and we had fresh milk! We could even hike the three miles to the headquarters PX and buy ice cream! The only safe beach area for swimming was as Ishakawa. I once had to go over to Ie Shima to Repair a bulldozer. No soldiers were based there and I was surprised to see that the women were bare-breasted! Ie Shima is where Ernie Pyle was killed. A monument was erected on the site. Later on in1950-51 I served in the 376th Engineer Construction Battalion in Korea in the Pusan Beachhead. There I served in S-2 as a photographer. In 1955-56 I was an aviation cadet and even flew jets until I had the misfortune of crashing and breaking my back . . . among other things . Now I am medically retired and enjoying life as a widower . . . BUT I have a dog!

We have tried to get information from the Veterans Records, but due to a fire in the early 1970's all records were destroyed or lost for vets with the last names A through M.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Comments: Dear Forum,

I am currently at work in Seoul for the next 5 months and trying to find
one of my father's Korean War Army friends, Choe Ik Song (Mr. Song).
My father was stationed 822 EAB w/SCARWAF in Pusan where Mr. Song
was also stationed.

I have Mr. Song's mailing address from 1951:

CHOE IK SONG (looks like he wrote Sang, but then made the 'a' into an
'o')
Ro Pyung Goo
59 Sasottum
Oochuguk
Pusan, Korea

My father passed away last year so many of the good stories are not at
my finger tips. If any one has any information on Mr. Song, please let
me know as it would be such a blessing to find this man and reunite
him with old pictures.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Most Sincerely,
Jamie

Earl Tutt Lambert wrote on April 13, 2008

City and State: LOVELAND OH

Unit: CO. C, 822ND EAB

Service or Relationship: Army Veteran

Comments: I am in the process of writing a brief history of the
822nd Enginer Aviation Battalion based on the diary of
Captain W.S. Bradshaw of Co. C. The daily entries
began on Okinawa when the unit was alerted for
deployment to Korea, dated 11 Jul 50. The diary
continues until Captain Bradshaw was exavuated to
Japan on 18 Sep 50 where he died of polio. An
unidentified soldier in H/S company continued the
diary until 22 Oct 51.

The diary was in the possession of Major John Herina,
a former C.O. of the battalion. He passed away in
2004 and his son, Marc Herina, loaned the keepsake to
me in hopes of producing a more concise history of the
unit.

A second source for the history is from the
recollections of former C Company platoon leader, Col.
John Munnelly who is assisting with the identification
of many former unit members. Lt. (then) Munnelly
served in the unit from 1950-1952 in C Company.

Any former member of the 822nd who has materials,
photos or memories that they wish to share with the
writer, please contact me at my email or phone: 513-
683-0027.

I was a Sgt. with C Company from Aug 51 to Aug 52.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately those that I did contact did not recall him, I pulled dozens of names of the other vets, only a few were able to ring bells, but nothing solid. Dad suppress the emotions of the war for years, when I begin to read of the 822nd , I see why. You men are one of the greatest units to serve and unsung heroes. Prior to passing did work as a construction subcontractor, served 28 years on the Daytona Beach Police Department. fell free anyone to contact me.

Comments: My dad, Robert (Bob) Douglas Prather, was a Captain in the 822 Combat Engineers in Korea during the war.

He was from Georgetown, Kentucky and died of cancer in service at Fitz Simmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado, in 1955.

I'm sure you didn't know him, but he died when I was only 6. I am looking for links to possibly find out some of his army buddies to learn more about the dad I really never got to know before they are all gone.

Thanks for any help.

Comments: Hello, my name is Sandra Turbeville Harvey and my father Farrell Turbeville was in the 822 Engr. Bn. Co. C, in Taegu, Korea. This was in 1951 and 52 I think. I have been trying to find out what happened to some of the people he served with...one incident that happened was when they were grading a new road and came under fire...he ended up driving what he called a deuce and a half to pick up some wounded. One of which was a young black man that had been shot in the rear...but before they could reach safety he hit a land mine and the truck exploded...Dad said they both survived but while he was in the hospital before they sent him home he refused the medal they offered him saying "give it to someone really wounded." I would appreciate if anyone remembers this to send me an email or call...
Dad has had a stroke and although he can't remember day to day things he remembers his time over there...
Thanks Sandra
