Comments: Dad passed away in January 2017 (this year) and was buried at Arlington in June. He was in SCARWAF (Engineering Aviation Battalion) during Korea and an active member of the SCARWAF Association. He served in Korea (was also in Japan, Okinawa, Fort Sill, Fort Hood, and Camp Chaffee) while in the 808TH. ANC is requiring proof of him having served in SCARWAF. None of his DD-214 show SCARWAF. I have plenty of photos and insignia and patches and other items, but ANC wants official documentation. Is there anyone out there who can help me track down his assignment to SCARWAF? Also, on Dad's discharge from USA, the DD-214 shows he left with a rank of SGT(T) - Tech Sgt. in June 1952 ANC is arguing with me that there is no such rank and it represents a Temporary classification. By all military history written about WWII and Korea, SGT(T) was for Tech Sgt and I have Dad's patches/insignia to prove he was a Tech Sgt. but again, I am arguing the point with ANC. Anyone have any help on this?

Comments: Hello,

I'm looking for any information or stories about my Grandfather, Glen Elmer Lang. He was a clerk in the Army and was based at Kunsan Air Force Base with the 808th between 1951 and 1953. I don't know what company he was in; he barely spoke at all. I have two pictures taken by him while on the base, and one of them features a sign painted with the 808th's unit number written on it.

Comments: I arrived March 1950 Kadena AFB Okinawa. Embarked Oki April 1951 with whole battalion for Kunsan, Korea arrived four days later. Loaded into landing boat sailed up the
Han River to build a new fighter bomber base named K-8.

I was a heavy equipment operator in Headquarters Co. When we left Okinawa, but while enroute aboard ship I was transferred to Company B as their Personnel Clerk because He contacted appendicitis and I was also the Company Clerk in Hdqs Co. Until war started.

Upon my request I was reassigned to heavy equipment operator. I was the first dozer breaking ground for a new B-50 strip alongside the B-29 strip, but before we finished we left Kadena and were shipped to Korea.

Left Korea arrived Stateside Feb 1952. Honorable Discharged Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. August 1952 returned home Salem, Ohio.

wirhin days..I must say that when my unit arrived at kunsan,
we had no officers or ncos. they were all Killed by the enemy.
I was appointed as operations sgt. with 9 reg.army and 13 south
koreans assigned to me for installing temp runways for our f86
sabre jets until the actual runways were 100% completed. As
more men were assigned to me, because the runway repair project
became huge and a deadline for completion was pushed, I was
appointed acting operations officer (2Lt.). After all the work
was completed and I left Korea,I was relieved of the Operations
Officer and promoted to CPL.Reason.. I was too young to be an
officer and I at the time only had an 8th grade education.. I
did apply for OCS,sadly did not qualify. It was an awesome
adventure!

In cleaning out my mother's house I came across photos my father took of people whom I assume were his squad or company mates during his time with the 808th in Korea. I would like to make these photos available to anyone with an interest in the 808th. They are all high emulsion monochrome. Not unusual for that time.

Some of these photos have names on them but most are unidentified. My father was Cpl. Ralph J. Ferraro. Heavy equipment operator. I have no company or unit information beyond that.

Comments: Can anyone help solve this mystery for me!
My late father kept a box which I believe belonged to Captn Gross, sent as a postal gift I assume, from the MacVeans in N.Y. (father worked for the Royal Family at Windsor Castle, but I assume this has no connection)
I never asked him about it as I didn't know the box existed until his death in '82. He had all his 'treasures' stored in it! I tucked it away in the attic and never gave it another thought. However, now I would like to return it to the family as I am sure they would love to have it safely back home rather than gathering dust in an English attic! My sons will probably toss it in the bin when I'm gone, which would be sad. The info was painted inside the lid and the box is wooden, approx 9"x11"x4" and painted dark green.
Just wish I'd been able to ask him about it before he passed away!
With all good wishes and heartfeltthanks to all you brave guys who gave so much so that my generation over here didn't grow up speaking German!

Comments: Things I remember: 1.Roll call annc'mt by Bn Comm. Our Bn had highest VD rate in entire Army, 16%. 2. A.F. armamant boys loading B-26 with bombs, dropped one. 10 planes were destroyed before fireworks stopped. 3. Troop info and edcu sessions, great visual aids! 4. Pete Swang, Bn photographer, and his photo books, WOW! 5. Base Comm. who liked to take a B-26 up and blow up enemy locomotives. Called him locomotive Charley. 6. Blowing up mountain for new runway. A big fissel, not enough explosive. 7. Sand fleas and getting sprayed with DDT every now and then. 8. The guy from Detroit who ran a crap game all night long in the tent across from mine. 9. The typhoon that never came. 10. The horrible water in the company lister bag. 11. Ronnie and Buckshot the Korean kids who lived with us. 12. The Korean trucks and crew who cleaned the latrines, a lesson in cleanliness. 13. We had a sign in our survey office that said "Welcome to Kunsan, the only place in the world where the germs are big enough to be seen". Does anybody else remember any of this stuff?

Comments: While we were on Okinawa I came onto a copy of the Battalion History. I was a draftsman in the S-3 Office at the time and read it through completely. The history covered the unit from its inception through Australia, New Guinea, all the way to Okinawa. It was a very interesting read. Does anyone anywhere know how to acquire a copy of it.
