We know that he died on 11/1/51 at Pak's Palace. We know little of the circumstances, however, surrounding his capture, time as a POW, or death. He was a member of the 3rd Infantry Division, 3rd Reconnaissance Company, and was in tanks at some point in Korea. Previous to Korea
he was in the 101st Airborne in WWII, was a Sgt.
then, was discharged, and renlisted shortly before
Korea began. If anyone happened to know our father or has information about him, your recollections would be welcome. We have tried to find information from the VA, but apparently his records were destroyed in a fire sometime in the seventies. Thank You, Connie Coleman and Debbie Getz.

Extract:

Segerant George M. Mapes, Armor, 3d Reconnaissance Company, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 27 September 1951, near Hurullae, Korea, the 3d Reconnaissance Company, while on a mission to secure enemy prisoners, was ambushed by a well-entrenched hostile force. During this action, four men of a rifle squad were wounded and, Sergeant MAPES, assistant squad leader, seeing his comrades lying helplessly in the open, fearlessly crawled from his relatively safe postition out of range. Sergeant MAPES heroic and selfless regard for the well-being of his fellow soldiers reflects great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from the State of Michigan.
