Comments: Looking for anyone who may have served with my father Henry (Abe) Rainey in Japan in 1951-1952, following his return from combat in Korea. He returned to Pennsylvania in 1952 with his bride Sachiko Matsumoto (nicknamed "Pete").. I believe his rank was TSgt(?), and he worked in the motorpool when he was in Japan. He also was a driver for various officers.

Comments: The 229th Ordnance was based in 1952 and 1953 at Tomioka, between Yokohama and Yokosuka on the main road. I was stationed there, and it was still part of the JLC -- Japan Logistical Command -- and had no waterfront installations to speak of. The seaplane base mentioned above as at Sugita sounds more like Oppama Ordnance Shops, just south of Tomioka, where the army rebuilt jeeps, 4-bys etc., from Korea and the navy had an aircraft rebuild facility. The Mighty Mo sometimes anchored offshore and sometimes gave tours -- with emphasis on the plaque marking the surrender signing -- to the GI's. I have been told that Fuji Motors, created y the army to run the OOS was the founder of Saburu. Don't know if that is true. OOS was part of the 229th.

Comments: I was assigned to the Tokyo Ordnance Deport in the fall of 1956 as a member of the MP Detachment, 8160 Army Unit. Later served as NCOIC of the K-9 Training Center at the depot. Capt. Herman Trop was the MP CO. Capt. Trop (retired as Col.) is doing well in NC. Anyone serving with the unit is asked to respond. I understand the depot closed soon after I departed for the states.

Comments: Captain Fred P. Badin was, last I heard, in a retirement home on the East coast. Elwyn "Mother Elwyn" Sievers now lives in Oklahoma. Allen Kirstein has passed away. I've lost track of Boelter and Graham.
Last I heard, Ernie Ellison was living in NYC.

Keywords: The 229th OBD was settled into the old Central Command station at Sugita seaplane base in Japan. Japan Logistical Command had been dissolved in late 1952 and we wore the "Fuji patch". The 79th OSCD was incorporated into the 229th OBD in late 1952.
I took many photos of the 229th buildings and grounds, including the remains of breakwaters and hangars of the old WW-II seaplane base. All of these photos (slides) were sent to the Annals of Flight project at the Smithsonian Institution. It is interesting to note that the battleship Missouri was anchored right off Sugita in Tokyo bay for the surrender ceremony in 1945.
I still have a few b and W photos of the 229th building in my album.
