Comments: The 1903rd Engineer Aviation Bn was activated at Geiger Field on 1 Jun 43. It was inactivated there on 20 Dec 43, when the number of Engineer Aviation Battalions still in training in the US was severely reduced, but was reformed (or a new unit with the same number was formed) at Geiger Field on 9 Jul 44. It arrived on Ie Shima Island, Pacific, in April 1945 (possibly moving through Hawaii) and was inactivated on 16 May 46. Reactivated Oct 1950, arrived in Korea Nov 1951, it was part of the 417th Engineer Aviation Brigade (SCARWAF) in Korea during the Korean War, serving at Pusan and Pyongtaek, with some elements serving at Osan AirbaseB and Suwan Airbase.
The 1903rd Aviation Engineer Battalion, composed of separate National Guard units; the HQ & HQ Service Company (Illinois), 1806th Engineer Aviation Company (Michigan, now B Company), the 1807th Engineer Aviation Company (Missouri, now A Company), and the 1809th Engineer Aviation Company (Colorado, now C Company), was activated on October 1, 1950.
The battalion was moved to Fort. Leonard Wood, Missouri where it began basic infantry and advanced engineer training. In late May 1951, the unit was moved to Camp Beale, California and placed under control of the U. S. Air Force. In August, 200 men of the battalion were dispatched to the Medicine National Forrest to fight wildfires. At Camp Beale, the unit continued training on vehicle maintenance, infantry and engineer training.
On November 9, 1951 the 1903rd boarded the USNS General Nelson M. Walker. Arriving in Tokyo Bay Yokohama Harbor, the battalion boarded a Japanese train, crossing the island nation. The 1903rd then embarked on a troop ship and landed at Pusan, Korea.
The 1903rd then boarded trucks and moved to K-1 Air Base outside Pusan and relieved the First Marine Air Wing of all responsibilities for maintaining the base and runways. The unit operated a gravel pit, rock quarry, rock crusher, and asphalt plant. In addition, repair projects included; fence lines, base drainage systems, road repair, runway and taxiway repair, rehabilitation of buildings and the petroleum depot.
From January to June 1952, the battalion sent A Company to K-2 Air Base at Taegu, B Company to K-9, also near Pusan, and C Company to K-3 on the east coast of Korea. The headquarters and a newly formed provisional company, D Company, remained at K-1 in Pusan and continued repair work there.
When the armistice was signed in July 1953, the 1903rd continued with maintenance and repair work on all airfields it was responsible for. In fact, K-55 Air Base at Osan, was added to the unit?s duties. At Osan, elements of the battalion helped to build a radio site, Chaplain?s Quarters, Ice Cream plant, warehouses, post exchanges, and Quonset huts for Airmen housing. The battalion was also tasked to build recreation facilities, including a golf driving range.
Loading up for Camp Beal
Loading up for movement to Camp Beale, Calif.
By January 1954, the battalion had shrunk due to personnel losses (normal rotations), however; engineer projects still kept it busy. The K-13 Air Base at Suwan, was also added to the 1903rd?s list of projects. Sliding hangar doors, Quonset huts, overrun lights (at the ends of runways), alert aprons, and blast fences were all completed after the armistice was signed. At K-6 Air Base at Pyongtaek, the runways and taxiways were extended and drainage was improved from November 1953 to February 1954.
The 1903rd received a warning order in October 1954 to prepare to return to the U.S. Movement orders were received on on December 4, 1954. The 1903rd boarded the USS Anderson at Inchon, Korea and sailed for San Francisco. It arrived at Wolters Air Force Base, Texas (aka Camp Wolters & Fort Wolters) in March 1955. Here, most of the Korean veterans were discharged and replacements filled the unit?s ranks. Construction projects at Wolters occupied the engineers? time from March to September. Headquarters Aviation Engineer Force orders released the 1903rd Engineer Aviation Battalion to the control of the National Guard effective September 25, 1955. However, only the unit designation would return to Chicago. By September 1955, the unit was predominantly a Regular Army unit; most Guardsmen having rotated home after their 21 month obligation was completed in June 1952.

Comments: I am the grandson of Paul Soho who is alive but his health is not the best. As time goes on, I have become more and more interested in finding info on what he was involved in during the Korean War, both for mine and my families interest and also to make sure he is honored the way all those there should be. It was only a few years ago that we found out he had four medals coming to him that he had never followed up on himself and he never told any of us about. This along with a lot of recent reading and watching some very good specials on the Military and Military History channel have spurred my interest and drive to find out more.

To this day, none of us, not even my grandmother know anymore than the fact that he was there. It was just in the past few weeks that I realized that I never thought about using the internet to look this up, I just needed to know his unit. He did tell me this much, so here I am tonight trying to find out more of what he and the 1903 were involved in. Was it more maintenance and supply, was is combat, was it rescue operations, were they involved in any of the major campaigns/battles? I know none of this but would really like to find out.

My other grandfather is more of the "proud vet" who served in the TX air national guard after leaving the army (following Korea). He will happily share stories but my other grandfather will not. He doesn't mind me looking into it, he just chooses not to talk about it himself for whatever reason.

Paul was there starting in 1952 and served with the 1903 Aviation battalion is all he has told me, and that is more than he has ever told me in the past.

If anyone knew Paul, served with him, or can tell me general info as to what he was or may have been involved in, that would be a great help.

Thank you from all of us to all of you who serve and keep us safe....Then, now and into the future!

Comments: Sometimes it's hard to figure out who was what and who did what in Korea during 1951 up to the signing of the peace negotiations.

Jim Foreman and I are trying to add info. so you can understand what ENGINEER AVIATION BATTALIONS were and what they did.

The 1903rd EAB was part of the 417th Engineer Aviation Brigade. This Brigade was an Army unit working (attached to) the Air Force. The words SCARWAF sometimes seen, simply means Army attached to Air Force.

Here's how SCARWAF was activated in Korea.

417th Engineer Brigade
903th Engineer Aviation Group
622nd Maintenance Company

931st Engineer Aviation Group
809th and 811th Batallion
919th Maintanance Company

934th Engineer Aviation Group
802nd and 839th Engineer Aviation Batallion

336th, 840th, 841st and 1903rd Eng. Aviation Batallion
733rd Maintenance Supply Point Company
420th Topography Batallion

All the above Groups, Companies and Batallions were attached to the 417th Engineer Brigade which was in charge of building, repairing and maintaining airfields (airbases) in Korea during the war.

Initially the Marines were using bases/airfields in Korea which were constructed by the Navy or were left over Japanese Airfields from World War II. When the Air Force went to Korea, the airfields needed to be made bigger and longer for jet aircraft. Many bases were built or totally rebuilt depending on the aircraft stationed at that base.

If you, your relative or someone was attached to any of the above listed units, they were a person in the Army, working for the Air Force building or fixing the airfields in Korea.

Comments: I was assigned to Co. "C" 1903rd EAB from Jan to July 1954 at Suwon as just another construction hand. From there we transferred (as a unit) to Co "B" of the 811th EAB and went by boat to Itami, Japan for a few months, but eventually settled on the island of Hokkaido, Japan. The airbase was called Chitose, and a more cold and barren place never existed on this earth. I got smart, told the CO I could type and served as company clerk until my departure in Nov. 55.

I must say, I'm somewhat amazed that there are still a few of us out there.

Names I remember: Ellery Okada, Harry Gannon, Amos Kawee, Sylvester Kubiak, Duane C. Frohwein, Robert Wohlfahrt. I believe the C.O. was Lt. Ralph M. Clack.

I'll bet half these names are wrong, but the old memory can fool you at times.

For those looking for the SCARWAF patch (universally worn by all) it's a white winged sword on a Red Shield. I saw several while serving in Vietnam, but I don't think the original is available anymore.
