Comments: Aircraft Mechanic School at Ft Rucker AL Nov-Dec 1960. Arrived Camp Stanley Mar 1961 from Ft Bragg NC. Was assigned to 13th Trans and TDY to 151st Maint. Also worked in Tech Supply obtaining repair parts for aircraft and vehicles.

Keywords: My nickname was Link. Real name is Larry.
Was in H-21 crash in Apr '61 due to total engine failure. They called it a controlled crash as we were able to auto-rotate into a farmers dry rice paddy just outside the Camp Stanley fence. I have 519 photos from my time there. I departed 19 Jun 1962 after 16 months due to involuntary tour extension by the U.S. Army. That morning we had a fatal crash on the runway of a H-21. 4 hours later my H-21 ride took me to Inchon to my ship. Yes, I was a little apprehensive but my flight was no problem that day. Also all enlisted lower ranks were required to have a military equipment driver's license. About May 1961 I was driving a 5 ton and lowboy trailer with engines, rotor blades and hubs to Kimpo Direct Exchange Point when my truck cab was shot full of bullet holes. From S. Koreans of the two factions fighting for control of their Government. I accidentally drove through a firefight, they were shooting at each other across the dirt road I was driving on that went to Kimpo. Due to noisy truck I did not hear the shots.

Remember July,1958 when the H-21 came flaming in to airfield from training mission. We had to get every mattress and every 55 gal. drum onto tarmac,we began spraying foam to underbelly as flames erupted. Crew and everyone fighting fire with foam were ok,limited damage to chopper.

I remember the 13th's logbook, which was kept in the orderly room where I looked through it while on guard duty. It had daily entries from way back into the '50's. Pictures of Bob Hope and his troupe deplaning to entertain the troops at (I think,) Camp Casey. Do you reckon that book went to Vietnam too? Could it still exist? Where? What a treasure it would be. Someone could write a book from the notes and daily entries. Does H-1 still exist at Stanley? I think Camp Stanley has a website. Anybody familiar with how the disbanding of the 7th logistical Command effected the 151st?

Comments: I can only remember one name , Quackenbush. He wes a crew chief on a 21. The NCO club was my downfall. Much partying and hangovers. It was a great bunch of guys to party with.

Comments: I did a 15 month tour with the 13th from January 1955 through April 9, 1956. Went to school at Gary AFB and came over on the Gen. John Pope. Would like to hear from anyone that was on that voyage to see if they remember the fellow who had to be removed from the ship about 3 days out (swallowed a quarter while standing in the PX line - or so I remember). I also remember hitting the International Date Line on December 24th and the next day, therefore, was December 26th - no Christmas that year. Any confirmation on this or is my memory scrambled. Also recall the H-19 crash in Early April loaded with guys returning home - lucky no one was killed. Also recall the H-19 painted with red cross markings for the rescue of the AF pilot shot down in the DMZ.

Keywords: Uijongbu, OP-l, NNITS, Rescue of AF pilot, lifting bomb from minefield, crash of 199.
