2. Search: Foster Tallman 73rd Eng Bn, brother of Frank Tallman and Prudy
==========================================================

The KWP receives dozens of inquires by mail, phone and email each week from folks wishing to find details on vets.

The sister of Frank and Foster Tallman, Prudy has been on such a quest for some time now. We mentioned Prudy in a newsletter some time ago, but had no detailed information on his unit.

Prudy is creating a book on the family. Much is known, worldwide, about her famous brother, Frank Tallman, the aviator. Frank collected, rebuilt, and flew vintage aircraft. He was widely known as a movie stunt pilot. His planes are sought after collector pieces.

Now, Prudy wants to find out about Foster and his military service. She finally found that he was with the 73rd Engineer (C) Bn in Korea 1952-53.

Call Prudy Tallman Wood at: (858) 459-6459 or email Ted Barker at
tbarker@kwp.org

Editor Note: the Tallman story is an example of postings to our Guestbook and Looking For areas. We do encourage persons to network by posting inquiries just like Prudy's, on the site.

Some form of contact point is needed: email, phone, address.

3. Finding Lost Friends by using the KWP
==========================================================

There are sections of the KWP which help foster finding friends and information about casualties. The Social Security Death Index is one way to help narrow a search for someone who may have passed away.

To narrow a search for old friends who may have passed away try this:

4. Korea: USMC interpreters/interrogators

To All:

As part of a historical project, looking for Marines that served as interpreters/interrogators. If you can put me in contact with any veterans that served in this position during the Korean War, would greatly appreciate it.

5. DMZ - Agent Orange inquiry, Al Friedman
==========================================================

Many of the postings on the KWP DMZ Vets Looking For and BBS area are about the spraying of herbicides, especially AO in Korea.

Detailed information has been printed in many journals about Vietnam and Panama spraying. More is unearthed about usage in Korea.

A new KWP contact, Al Friedman writes: ( Al is a National Service Officer)

I am Alvin Friedman
bigalf47@lvcm.com , N.S.O. N.V.O.A.(094) L.V. Chap#02,

I am looking for any court cases used to beat the VA. I am especially looking for vets attached to decon or ranch units who sprayed herbicides.

I need a notarized letter describing, where when how much.

We are very successful so I am offering help to anyone fighting for benefits.

I am also looking for maps that show spraying of herbicides ( we have viet nam).

6. Herbert Pilila'au, Hawiian - Medal of Honor 23rd Inf Rgt
==========================================================

Hal has been studying the history of the 23rd Infantry Rgt since 1979. In 1989 he was able to visit the family of Herbert after a trip to Korea and Hill 931.

Many hours were spent with the family, relating information on his service and death during the war.

John Dunn (23rd IR) sent us this photo of a fitting tribute to Herbert.

From John:

I am sending you a photo of the sign that was erected in honor of Herbert Pilila'au. This is at Makua Valley and is a military training area.

I thought you might like to add it to the site where his family and the Waianae high school photos are displayed.

From sign: The Company Combined Arms Assault Course is dedicated to his honor.

Battle Stars and Naval Awards

An extensive listing of the battle history of all of America's Naval fighting  ships which earned Battle Stars, Presidential Unit Citations or Navy Unit  Commendations during WWII or Korea. Over 20,000 Battle Stars were awarded during those wars, now you can read about each ship or unit, the engagement dates and battles participated in.

All classes of ships are included, Destroyers, Submarines, Landing Craft, PT
Boats, Merchant Marine, Tugs, Mine sweepers and Coast Guard ships. Aircraft  Carriers (and their fighter aircraft) are included. This single publication makes it as easy to track ships participating in the invasion of Europe as it is to read the follow-on activities of ships which survived the attack at Pearl Harbor, then went on to fight again.

The book documents three ships that earned two Presidential Unit Citations
during WWII, but the First Marines topped the list by earning six of those prestigious awards during WWII and Korea. Also included in the book are Navy and Marine Corps units that earned Presidential Unit Citations or Navy Unit Commendations.

Remove the guesswork while viewing war movies or old photographs, if a ship can be identified by hull number, you can look up that ships history to see if any awards were earned, and when and where it served.

Missing Men Ceremony - Table of Honor

Lest We Forget

As you entered the dining area, you may have noticed a table at the front, raised to call your attention to its purpose-it is reserved to honor our missing loved comrades.

The empty places represent our men missing from each of the four services-Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. This honors ceremony symbolizes that they are with us, here in spirit.

The table is round.....to show our everlasting concern for our men still missing.

The table is set for four.....signifying our service's unity.

The table cloth is white.....symbolizing the purity of their intentions to respond to their countries call to arms.

The single red rose, displayed in a vase.....reminds us of the life of each of the missing, and their loved ones and friends who keep the faith, awaiting answers.

The vase is tied with a red ribbon.....a symbol of our continued determination to account for our missing.

A slice of lemon on the bread plate.....to remind us of the bitter fate of those captured and missing in a foreign land.

Salt, also on the bread plate.....a symbol of the tears endured by those missing and their families who seek answers.

The glasses are inverted.....for they are not able to toast with us today. Finally, a single candle burning an eternal flame.....as a lighthouse awaiting the return of an overdue ship. As we stare deep into the flame we reflect on their courage, determination, and sacrifices.

MAY GOD BLESS THEM AND KEEP THEM IN THE HOLLOW OF HIS HAND AS WE REMEMBER THEM IN HONORED GLORY

13. VA Wants to hear from former POW's
==========================================================

Larry Phillips writes: (excerpt from Yahoo VA Press Release) Sept. 19, 2003

WASHINGTON - Veterans Affairs wants former prisoners of war who are not getting disability compensation, health care and other benefits to contact the department.

The agency said Friday an estimated 11,000 former POWs are not getting benefits to which they are entitled. The VA issued the plea in conjunction with National POW-MIA Recognition Day.

VA Secretary Anthony Principi said more ex-POWs are eligible for benefits as new illnesses are determined to be related to their captivity. In July, VA said it would provide benefits to former POWs with cirrhosis of the liver.

Former POWs are eligible for VA medical care and are exempt from health care co-payments. Free dental treatment is available if their captivity lasted more than 90 days.

"These veterans sacrificed for their country in time of war, and it's the nation's turn to serve them, to help them determine if they are entitled to compensation, health care or other services," Principi said.

The VA said more than 23,000 former POWs receive compensation. The VA sent a letter to another 4,700 to tell them that they were entitled to benefits.

VA said it is hard to find many former POWs because they served during World War II, before Social Security (news - web sites) numbers were used as military service numbers.

VA is asking anyone who knows of former POWs who are not enrolled for benefits or who did not receive a letter to call 1-800-827-1000.

14. Morehead City Vets Parade Nov. 8th 2003
==========================================================

The Morehead City Veterans Day parade is set for Sat. Nov,8 at 11am.
This by reputation is the largest Veterans' parade in NC. Our group is invited.

I would like to see all the Korean Vet Associations. in this parade.

This is also a great time to visit the beach and beautiful Carteret County..

The cost of hotels etc. is dirt cheap at this time of the year and the weather  and deep sea fishing is great in November
