1. 52nd Anniversary of the start of the war
==========================================================

Fifty-two years ago today, the Korean War began.

On this Day of Remembrance, we take the opportunity to thank
you for your support of the Korean War Project. Without your
support, we would not have the opportunity to remember
Korean War Veterans and their families for the last seven
years.

We are proud to be the primary Korean War resource for
units, reunions, casualty lists, and general communications
concerning Korea. Your support made this possible.

We pay tribute to all those lost in Korea. And we pay
tribute to all veterans of Korea, including those who have
served along the DMZ and in support of the defense of the
Republic of Korea since 1950.

We Remember….

Sincerely,

Hal and Ted Barker

3. US Forces - Korea 1945-1949
==========================================================

Recent email from Don Bohrer reminds us of the service in
Korea by US Forces after the cessation of fighting in World
War II.

a.)Ted,

I noted in your recent news letter that the US Korean War
medal will be awarded to those who served in Korea during
the period July 27, 1954-July 25th 2002.I guess I am
wondering why the men who made up The Army Of Occupation,
KOREA September 1945 to late 1948 are never given any
recognition for their services. They seem to be the
forgotten ones.

Thanks!

Don Bohrer

1946-47 13TH ENGINEER COMBAT BATTALION 7TH INFANTRY DIVISION

b.) Dear Sir or Madam,

I had the honor to have served in this Division in Korea,
immediately prior to "The Forgotten War", with the 3Ist Inf
.Rgmt.,3rd Btn,"H"Co,as a mortor squad leader and led a
small patrol to just South of the 38th Paralell from
Chunchon,Korea, drawing hostile rifle fire from North
Koreans, which we did not return, because the shots came at
us from, at least, 3 miles away.

Having said all this, all I want, at this point in my life
is to receive, at least, one Divisional patch prior to the
4th of July next and, later, to reestablish contact with so
the men I served with in Korea such a long time ago...

Thank You,
Joseph Phillip Corell (Was Cicorelli)

Editor correction: Ted mis-identified Norm Tredway (KDVA) as
Norm Jensen, in the last newsletter.

"The KDVA first popped up on our radar via Norm Jensen who
has put countless hours into obtaining recognition for those
who served and continue to serve in Korea."

Hey guys, thanks for the coverage of KDVA. BTW our hard
working leader is Norm Tredway not Jenson. Also HR 1935 has
225 Cosponsors and S 999 has 55. This Legislation will
award the Korea Defense Service Medal to those serving in
Korea after July 1954.

Thanks again for your intrest in Korea Service.

John Christoff, Finance Officer
Korea Defense Veterans of America

Here are some excerpts from email received at the KWP, about
post-truce service.

a.) REPLY: Hal and Ted,

I arrived June 1967 and left July 1969. I was assigned
first to Plans and Operations Branch, then Strategice
Intelligence and then Intelligence Branch of the Military
Intelligence Division, ACofS, G2, Hq, 8th US Army (EUSA).

As one of my duties in Plans and Operations was to keep
track of MDL markers and DMZ firefights and assist in the
preparation of the daily briefing for General Bonesteel who
wore three hats: CG, EUSA; CG, US Forces, Korea; and CINC,
United Nations Command; Post the situation map in the TOC
and list he firefights including the WIA, KIA, and MIA.

At one point I tallied up the number of firefights during my
stay in Korea: 465 my first year and 585 the second year
(from classified data and may not agree with the published
data). The guys on the DMZ deserve the credit for keeping
the NKs from a full scale attack.

b.)Hi,

I spent two years at Ascom City in the early 70s. I am
looking for any maps of Ascom or websites that might get me
a map. One of the entire surroundings, which include
Bupyeong. I have a website in Korea that maps the area
today, but obviously, changes have been made. I was in one
of the last units to pull out of Ascom in 1975 before it was
given over to the Korean Military. Now, it seems the area is
all Hyundai and other business. ANy info you might have will
be a great help to me.

Thanks.

Tim Norris

PS. I had three uncles in the Korea War, Marines, Seabees,
and Army, one fought at Pusan, another was on the Chosun
Res. breakout. Names were John Norris - Marines, WIlliam
Norris - Army, and Richard Norris - Seabees.

Hello. My name is Joshua Prager. I'm a reporter at the Wall
Street Journal currently on book leave writing about a
baseball game that took place on October 3, 1951. The event
was a playoff game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New
York Giants that culminated in Bobby Thomson's famed home
run, the "Shot Heard 'Round the World."

The radio call of the game was carried by Armed Forces radio
and I'd very much like to include a story or two about
soldiers in Korea who were able to listen to the game.

If you have an interesting story to share about listening to
the game while a soldier in Korea, I'd love to hear it.
Thank you so very much.

My email is
jhp@nyc.rr.com

Sincerely,

Joshua Prager

"Well, I'll be damned department"

Having served with the 223rd from May to end of
hostilities-1953, as a company medic, I have tried, without
success, a number of venues to locate others from that unit
during that time period .

A few months ago, I joined an international pen-friends club
and to my amazement, received a letter from a former North
Korean/Chinese soldier..wounded..and treated at my company
aid station while being processed back through the lines as
a pow..We only corresponded a few times, and he dissapeared
again, but the experience was a special occassion in my
life..The odds of being remembered by an enemy soldier,
wounded and captured so long ago...beyond calculation...

Just a point of interest...

Keep up the good work...

b.) Hi,

I am married to a Korean War Veteran, but lost a brother in
Korea and also had another brother, now deceased, that was
in the 213th Air National Guard out of Southern Utah. A
note of interest is a documentary that will be showed in
Utah on Channel 5 at 6:30, 22 Jun 2002. It is entitled
"Miracle at Kapyong: The Story of the 213th. An article
was written in the Standard Examiner, 16 Jun 2002. I have
forwarded it to you. The first date of showing was
preempted. It might be interesting enough to pass it on in
your Newsletter.

Thanks, Nan

a.) "Destination Korea"

I served in the 2nd Infantry Division recently from Jan 96 -
Jul 97 and was stationed at Camp Howze in Pa-ju county just
south of the DMZ. I recently read a book titled
"Destination Korea" which is a compilation of letters
written during the Korean War by LT Dana A. Curtis (KIA in
Korea April 51). The letters were compiled into a book by
his granddaughter.

I recommend it as reading if you are not aware of it.

b.) 3 RAR and 187th RCT

Dear Mr Barker

I am the widow of Lt Col Charles Green who commanded 3 RAR
(Australia) when his battalion which was in the British
Commonwealth Brigade went to the aid of the "Rakkasans" -
187th Airborne - who were dropped on 20th October 1950, 30
miles north of Pyongyang.

I have had the bio of my husband published. Now I am
working on some articles for a military magazine. In
particular, I would like to get some Rakkasan stories about
the 20th October action.

Can you refer me to any? Best wishes to all.

Sincerely
Olwyn Green
